Tropical Fruit Discussion / Up Potting Sabara Jaboticaba
« on: February 27, 2021, 03:17:30 PM »
Here's a fairly long video detailing my soil mix using off the shelf products here in California for my jabo soil mix. This jabo was really chloritic since the roots were tickling into my ultra alkaline soil and it badly needed an up pot.

Hope someone finds it helpful

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Acidic white sapote scions
« on: February 25, 2021, 11:59:30 AM »
I’m going to be topping my flowering 15’ tall white sapote in a week or so. The fruit is mildly acidic which is really nice compared to the usual cloyingly sweet white sapote I usually have found.

Branch diameter will be between 1/4” - 3/8”

$5 per scion minimum 4 - available to US or PR only

Payment via PayPal

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / King White Mulberry Scions
« on: February 24, 2021, 12:44:49 PM »
I'm going to be doing some severe pruning on my king white mulberry and figured I'd offer up some scions. It produces fruit nearly as long as Pakistani and is pure syrupy sweet with a touch of watermelon flavor. The buds are just about to pop open so it's a great time to graft them.

Looks like this one:

Most of the pruning will be pencil thickness or a bit thinner, and between 4" - 10" long.

$4 per branch, minimum 5 branches. Will ship in USPS priority box.

PayPal for payments and US / PR only.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting Red Jabo onto Sabara
« on: February 16, 2021, 08:24:22 PM »
https://youtu.be/BEU1Od8JV68

Another grafting video I was working on the last few days: putting some red hybrid onto my sabara cocktail tree. Lately I've been getting good takes on all the scions from members here so hopefully this gives you some confidence to give it a shot.

The cocktail tree now has açu paulista from Palologrower, Grimal from Jonah, and red hybrid from my tree which I just pruned.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting a Cocktail Apple Tree
« on: February 16, 2021, 07:02:26 PM »
My neighbor's apple tree suffered for the last 30 years and then punched out a monstrous root sucker over the last few years, dwarfing the original grafted tree. I made this video of me grafting this apple tree with some details about how I go about it.

https://youtu.be/yERWjyxQvts

Can't wait to try this bad-boy out in the future with the 6 new types on it. Akero, Regent, Bill's Red Flesh, Cinnamon Spice, Irish Peach, Goodland and a fresh graft from the old graft.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cleft Grafting Pineapple Guava
« on: February 16, 2021, 04:35:47 PM »
https://youtu.be/th2l50fwWIc

I made a little video while I was grafting my pineapple guava. Not sure if that was the right type of graft to go with, but it's the one I have the most experience with. Anyone know what works best for feijoa?

The rootstock is a huge plant but the fruit quality and productivity is pretty bad, so I hope these all take.

Hammered on some: Nazemetz x 1, Coolidge x 3, Improved Coolidge x 2, Precocious X 4, and Nikita x 4 (The number being how many scions of each I put on.)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I built a Cheap PVC Greenhouse
« on: October 12, 2020, 09:31:41 PM »

I’d been hmmming and hawing about what to do about a greenhouse this year. I’m a bit short of space (width) and so this is what I came up with. It’s 24’ long and 10’ wide with a peak about 10’ and will have two 940cfm gable fans to keep the highest part of the tunnel cooler. The sides roll up 2’ and I haven’t decided quite what do for walls but will likely just use more vinyl plastic.

Total cost is probably about $600 so far:

$200 for the vinyl cover
$300 in building materials
$100 in shuttered gable fans

Really looking forward to a warm and humid space in the winter.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Damaged cherimoya
« on: August 19, 2020, 02:42:10 PM »

Would you do anything with this damage? It seems so bad that but it’s growing slowly above it still. I’m tempted to lop it off at the bottom of the damage and hope it sends up a new leader.

I’ve been planting a lot of seeds over the last couple years and it’s getting a little too full at my house. Figured I would offer up some seedlings if anyone is interested in the Santa Barbara or Central California coast area. I don’t want to ship these, so please find a way to pick up locally. I’m at the top of the 154 in SB

All these plants are hardened to 100f+ and all went down to 32f, so it’ll be a tropical vacation if you take them somewhere else in CA that’s 9b or above. It is a desert / low humidity environment here so it’s not really nice for jabos, but again, they’ll love a more mild area. I up potted all of them (other than the inga, which are rooting out of the pot) over the last few weeks into my own soil mix and they’re all taking off.

5 gallon inga - $60 - I have two I’d sell
Black Star or Vermillion pitanga - $30 - many. I can’t tell which is which but all are from grafted trees which produce delicious black fruits
Orange Eugenia - these are from Marcos in Argentina - $30
CORG - $30 - from Marcos in Argentina
Red jaboticaba seedlings - $30 - Florida seeds
Lemon drop mangosteen or lemon drops - $20 - big roots and pushing new growth fast now

Have many seeds from desirable places in pots and starting off too, you can take a look if you visit? Nelita calcyina, Zills pitanga, red jabos, white jabos, etc etc.
Also have lots of good dragonfruit I can take cuttings of for you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2020 Grafts
« on: June 23, 2020, 01:55:21 PM »
I have been trying my hand at grafting this year and seeing some success. Can't be 100% sure of all of them but I wanted to share some photos and maybe others could share their grafts from this year too:

Couple black star pitanga seedlings with Zill's scions grafted on top

Zill's grafted on vermillion, nice thick scion

Zill's grafted on lolita, again a thicc boi

Heavily grafted white sapote, this thing hasn't flowered but is a giant: grafted on Santa Cruz, Pike, Lammertz, Lemon Gold, Suebelle, Supersweet, Nettie, and Walton

Suebelle and Lemon Gold grafted white sapote, with another Zill's on black star seedling

What appears to be a successful graft of Zill's on a senior and large lolita pitanga

I had this dead branch on the bottom of my grafted vermillion more senior pitanga, and I found green at the base, so I tried another Zill's on this

This is one I hope a more senior grafter can advise on: I see the scion is dead up top on this loquat (Vista White onto seedling) - are these just rootstock pushing through? Or will this be Vista white?

Successful Vista White on my neighbour's horrendous loquat seedling (it is awful!)

An even nicer success on the same, Vista White

White Jabo on Sabara, appears to be a take

Yellow grumichama on red grumichama, I tried 3 other cleft grafts with no luck, but this one is a maybe, it was green when I tipped it to check

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Disease on Pitanga, Jabo, Blueberries?
« on: January 10, 2020, 01:40:38 PM »
I’ve been seeing some unusual leaf spotting around my garden on several different plants. It has been around for awhile on some, and seems to be getting worse with winter. We also did have a pretty vicious hail storm and it came up on almost everything after - which makes me wonder if it’s just damage from getting beat with ice pellets.

Is this something to be worried about? Can anyone identify it? It’s not present on all the plants. Maybe just winter blues?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Blueberry Rust?
« on: December 09, 2019, 02:47:00 PM »

Could any blueberry growers confirm if this is something bad? I’ve had little issue with the plants other than chlorosis which I’ve been treating with soil acidifiers and chelated iron.

The plants shown here are uncovered and were hit by a pretty bad hail storm recently that dented or damaged most of my plants, including a bunch of succulents. There seems to be no spores or yellowing on the bottom of leaves, and leaves that are under others don’t have this look to them.

Should I be worried? The plants never defoliate at my house cause it never freezes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Winter Heating Method (Cheap)
« on: November 28, 2019, 01:44:09 AM »

I was too cheap to buy a greenhouse and way too many plants anyways, so I’m trying this method of putting incandescent Christmas lights (the ones you see at hipster restaurants) inside of 1.2oz frost cloth. This is why you need dragonfruit stands!

The results are actually really positive so far. The dragonfruit is inside the frost cloth and jaboticaba is on the other side of the house.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitanga / Surinam Flowering
« on: November 22, 2019, 01:21:13 PM »

I have quite a few pitangas. They are my favorite cherry by a long shot. The largest one I have (photo 2) was very sickly and had almost no leaves when I bought it and it made a tremendous amount of new growth this year. Even continuing now in winter. When I bought it, it was loaded with fruit - but since coming home with me it hasn’t produced any flowers at all, just leaves. Meanwhile my other much smaller vermillion is making so many flowers and fruit it’s practically falling down with the weight.

Did I overdo it with nitrogen and organic material on the large one, and must wait till it’s depleted before it will flower?

All my plants are in the same soil and have had the same fertilizer treatment of Osmocote slow release, and very little at that. Some chicken manure was added at the same time for all.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Plum Pests
« on: November 05, 2019, 01:19:13 PM »
I bought this Late Santa Rosa plum earlier this year and it has always been fairly sickly. I put some manure on it a few months ago and it finally burst out decent looking growth, and I stripped off almost all the sickly leaves. There seems to be some kind of pest on it, and I wonder if I should quarantine it or even take it off my property? I don’t want this to spread

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Duranta Erecta
« on: October 26, 2019, 12:07:53 AM »

Does anyone have much experience with this climbing vine? It is an odd flavor and you have to pick the spines off, but they’re tasty. The large one is from a cutting and smaller from seed. I find the bluish tinge on the leaves of the seedling unusual. Will it survive a 9b leaning 10a microclimate uncovered?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Topping Spindly Carambola
« on: October 21, 2019, 03:45:50 PM »
I just bought a Kari that is almost 10' tall, but with a diameter far less than an inch. Probably 1/2" at most. It is wispy up top with lots of new growth from 6'-10' but with no foliage or branches below.

Is it ok to top it? Is that recommended? I can't fathom any of the branches holding even a single fruit.

It's about 5' wide between the branches at its widest. Shaped like a T. I'll get a photo of it later.

No Longer searching, I've been informed of the correct source in CA.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Diamond Guava" Mango?
« on: July 18, 2019, 01:22:25 PM »
Has anyone heard of this variety?

I purchased it from Exotica, and wonder if it's HW-14 (Diamond) but crossed with something else?

Regardless, I do hear the Diamond variety is prolific and I'll probably need a hardy variety for my more mountainous area (will be bringing it inside on cold nights during the winter for a year or two till I move somewhere I want to plant it)
