Diospyros, Greek ‘dios’ (divine), and ‘pyros’ (fruit), referring to the excellent fruit of the genus.

How is the fruit of this one?

477
Have experienced sudden death of cempedak seedlings, not as easy as jackfruit. Our cempejacks are going very well.

478
Is the one in Mossman on public land? And is the Gordonvale one the one at Sugarworld parking?
I reckon they can naturalize in AU.
I got a 4m tree flowering profusely, second time this year.
Have 8m ones with no flowers but maybe it's the spot and not genetic variance.

Yay Peter, would love to try "Isla" one day!
Yes Penang, got a backpack ready to go once the world open again!
Well if you get 30 healthy good tree's that's better then 100 downers, I definetly planted to many in the beginning and they suffered from my neglect.
I guess you will still have visitors this year as many city folks want an escape from the city really bad and frozen durian just doesn't do the job so entusiasts will find a way to get fresh!

Satya, maybe a d. kinabaluensi X d. zibethinus would do it climate and taste wise.

Tropo that is "fruit crime" of high order... But hey sometimes the pigs and the cassowaries get to eat better then us ;)
Maybe you can contract to mow the place, lunch breaks wouldn't be to shabby ;)

Yes and hopefully I can get the gustavia when a friend is willing to ship it from Ecuador, says it's not working well with postal there at all.
Didn't know there where different sicanas, this one is from a red/orange one.

I assume the macapuno coconut was brought in long a go by people at the kamerunga since it has high value in phillipines.
Haven't found any wild coconuts with macapuno flesh yet :/

Yeah that's right Mike but I think Grays Russell is a cross with a guatemalan avo becuase it doesnt have pure green skin, it has a dark tinge and a bit rough skin. Like it's a cross with a hass type. Or the one he showed was a cross he has and I haven't seen his russell.

Nothing is for sale, this is not a business and can only provide seeds in small numbers.
Upon agreement of barter I will take photo of seeds and parcel and send the photo to you if requested, please do the same so there is transparancy and to avoid bad disputes. I can use tracked postage and give you the tracking number. Can also send non tracked. I am not responsible if parcel do not arrive, but can provide evidence that I did actually send what was agreed.
I use vermiculite or nothing as medium inside a zip-lock bag but can also use styrofoam. Please request preference.

Yay That's amazing Peter!
More durian to the world!
Still here it's hard to find a nursery with grafted plants, mostly random seedlings and some seedlings from known mother. I only plant seedlings so great for me. And a friend with 150 seedlings have many tree's that bear fruit of good quality with good yeilds with low input. He get's the same price as others who claim clonal origin like Mon thong, Gan yao etc. So I think farmers shouldn't be afraid of planting seedlings.

Even after 40 years of people cultivating durian here supply have not reached demand and prices are still high, $15-20/kg local whole fruit and up to $50/kg southern export whole fruit.
You can get seconds for like $10/kg at some markets and most premium ones are booked previously so never reach the market.

I think you farm retail model is the way to go, you get to keep the OM, some seeds and people get the freshest fruit with some education by just being around tree's! We need more home gardens and small farms with durian!

484
Mick did well with some other seeds, fresh and as described.
Thanks,
cassowary

485
Maryoto is easy to communicate with and everything was fresh and as described.

cossowary

486

Thanks

487

yay some of those would be good, maybe can make a d. zib hybrid.

490
yes cormiflorum is not very tasy.

491
good info arvind, Have you seen any matoa growing wild with natural lateral branches similar to like a durian or do they not really grow those?

I know that if the tip is damaged or cut then it shoots out and creates multiple leaders but they are weak and split away from the trunk easy in the wind. And the ones I got hare don't grow laterals yet, maybe when they are very tall?

Did you assist in that cross or was it done by insects?

I can eat similar amount of this fruit then of ripe breadfruit. Ripe breadfruit is sweeter though and there is a small veriety here that is a bit less "repulsive" ripe. If I add some lime fruit to ripe breadfruit I can eat a few cups of it.
The skin of this fruit has a little bit of bitter in it so I scrape the flesh of for best taste but the skin is agreeable.
I had somone else try it and they liked it.

Just got a refractometer so will test it soon.

I want to see if I can select a better one out of a bunch of seedlings or maybe it wants to cross with a similar species.

494
s. eryt. probobly needs lots of water since it's a river plant.
Our s. maleccanse's leafs some years get burnt by the sun in the dry, even though they are about 40 years old.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Junglesop(Anonidium mannii) seeds
« on: November 14, 2021, 12:10:37 AM »
Heard that Forest House Cameroon have some a. manii seeds.

496
The s. ery. looks beautiful and I think I have tried something like it a bit further north of cairns but the tree was a lot bigger growing in the forest. Have some which I think is daintree satinash (Syzygium monospermum or Syzygium cormiflorum). they are quite dry and not so sweet from what I can remember two years ago ( have to try again), pretty much biannual bearing on the tree we have I would say but when it goes for it it's adundant!
Have a small s. fibrosum, no fruit yet but excited to try it :D

There is also two other that I have found that are sour but good that I haven't id yet so there is huge potential for this genus.
Can try and find some images and upload.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tasting Palaquium galactoxylon FNQ AU
« on: November 13, 2021, 09:13:56 PM »
Just had the oppertunity to taste a fruit from Palaquium galactoxylon "Red Silkwood"
and I am not disapointed as I haven't found anything sweet like this in our rainforest section.

Flesh have sweetness about 60% of a good sapodilla with a taste similar to ripe bread fruit (artocarpus altilis). Skin is not very bitter, agreeable taste.
Texture is very similar to an engalak fruit (litsea gracie) or ripe breadfruit. They don't get smashed by falling from high in the cannopy but once ripe falls apart and bruise easily.
Have only tested this fruit from one tree yet so don't know how much difference there is but it also grows on Solomon island and New guinea according to Fruits of the Australian tropical rainforest by Cooper.

Can swap/barter the seeds, please have a look at my signature for list directions.
Have more fruits comming up that I haven't identified yet.

Thanks canito,
So that would be Govardhan Gardens I assume.
Last time I had a look at his website he was not sending out yet:
"Since Hurricane Maria destroyed much of my farm as well as the fruit tree nursery, the fruit tree nursery will remain closed at least until the end of 2021. There will also be no seed shipments or tours possible until that time. The bamboo nursery, however, is open again, and orders can already be processed. "

Wow incredible, here I have only seen them taking over an killing the tree they grow on. It makes a very spectacular hollow trunk once the original tree have rotted away.
Gonna keep my eyes open for the strangler grafting to another ficus.
