Tropical Fruit Discussion / Campomanesia Rooting
« on: April 22, 2023, 10:04:40 PM »
I have a single Campomanesia guazumifolia that's been flourishing in its container, both indoors and outside, so given how well it grows for me, I'd love to propagate it and grow more. Is it possible to take cuttings and root them, or do I have to wait for it to fruit and plant seeds?

I recently picked up an 8' tree, and I'm looking to make it a cocktail tree so I can get fruit sooner/on a single tree. Given that, I'd like to get 4-6 total scions from various varieties. I'm not too picky about what varieties they are, as long as it's a good mix, maybe 1-2 of each.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seedling ID
« on: April 10, 2022, 04:01:50 PM »
Does anyone know what this seedling is? A few months ago I put my a. monticola seeds into what I thought were empty pots, but a couple weeks ago this popped up. The only thing I think it could be is C. guazumifolia, but none of my other guazumifolia seeds sprouted, so I have no way to compare it to know for sure.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My First Cherimoya Fruit
« on: December 23, 2021, 09:03:44 PM »
I just got into this tropical fruit growing hobby this spring, and a lot of my trees I purchased as grafted 3 gallon plants. A couple of these were already flowering this summer, so I had a booth cherimoya and AP atemoya set fruit around August. For whatever reason the fruit on my booth dropped a couple of days ago, not sure if I overwatered or overfertilized it, as I think 4 months is slightly premature for this plant. Regardless, I sat it out on the counter and it ripened within a couple of days. I gave it a taste, and while it did taste like cherimoya, I wasn't very impressed. A touch bitter and overall not very sweet. Very seedy and little flesh. My trees are larger now and I know more about what I'm doing, so I'm hoping that I'll have better luck with my next harvest.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / White Sapote and Cherimoya seeds
« on: October 13, 2021, 10:13:38 PM »
I have some cherimoya seeds and white sapote seeds I'm looking to let go of, as I don't have the space to do anything with them. The cherimoya seeds were from july fruit, and the white sapote seeds are from not but a couple of weeks ago. Some of the white sapote seeds are beginning to germinate. I have about 2 dozen white sapote, and 4 dozen cherimoya seeds.

White Sapote - $1.50 per seed
Cherimoya - $0.50 per seed

Shipping - $9 for White Sapote, $5 for cherimoya, $9 combined.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these flower buds on my pink guava?
« on: October 10, 2021, 02:31:07 PM »
As title stated, I'm just curious whether these are buds forming at the base of the leaves on my pink guava, or if it's just new growth. I'm not really sure what to look for because this is my first year keeping guava.

I just potted some seeds from some store bought mango (I believe they were keitt), and I was curious as to whether they would make good rootstock for carrie and/or pickering. I've never grafted before, so I'm not sure whether I'd need a special rootstock for those varieties, or if anything would work.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocados - Grafting vs. Rooting
« on: September 21, 2021, 10:40:22 PM »
I'm entirely ignorant when it comes to avocados, but after a bit of reading I learned that there are a few varieties that should theoretically be able to grow year round in my climate, as our yearly lows are about 20-22.

This brings me to my question, is rooting avocado cuttings easy/possible, and if so, is grafting or rooting more commonplace? Does the variety of fruit the seed came from matter when it comes to vigor and cold tolerance?

Of the self fruitful cold hardy varieties (15-20 degrees), which are most commonly regarded as the best tasting? Looking at the varieties on this link, the amount of choices that can tolerate 15-20 degrees is somewhat overwhelming considering that I only have space for 1-2 trees. https://www.anaturalfarm.com/live-plants/avocado

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya fruit stopped growing?
« on: September 12, 2021, 02:38:25 PM »
My booth cherimoya fruited about a month ago, and I was noticing the fruit getting bigger each day. Recently it stopped growing though. It's still getting plenty of sun, and I fertilize with 5-1-1 fish emulsion every two weeks. Our nightly lows are still about 60-65, so I doubt it could be the temperature. This is my first year with this tree though, so I still don't know all the nuances of growing cherimoya.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How much to fertilize cherimoya?
« on: September 01, 2021, 05:15:44 PM »
I have three potted cherimoya, and one atemoya. They're all in 5 gallon pots, and their heights vary from 24-54". The trunks measure from about 16-36" tall and are 3/4-1" thick. I've been told by the sellers that they're all large enough to support about 1-3 fruits, and the african pride and booth already each have one fruit on them, while the white and pierce are currently beginning to flower. I've been using 5-1-1 fish emulsion, but I fear that it might not be enough now that they're fruiting, so I picked up some 10-10-10 today. Given the size of the trees and containers, how much/often should I use the 10-10-10 given the size of the trees? This is my first time with synthetic fertilizer, so forgive the newbie question.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can wasps harm trees/fruit?
« on: August 19, 2021, 12:01:51 PM »
I've had a wasp eyeing the small fruit on my atemoya tree for a couple of days now, and it's made me a little concerned... Can they harm plants/fruit? I know some like to eat fruit, so I've been keeping an eye on it, but I don't want to kill it if I don't need to.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona stenophylla
« on: August 17, 2021, 11:09:28 PM »
I just got some A. senegalensis and A. stenophylla seeds today, and the stenophylla really caught my interest, because I read that they have a rhizome. Based on my reading on bananas, I know that their corms can survive much colder temperatures than the main stem can, so I was thinking that A. stenophylla might be able to aswell. Does anyone here have any experience growing stenophylla in colder climates? I'm planning on doing a couple that I'll bring inside once winter hits, one in a pot, and one or two in the ground with mulch. Our yearly lows are generally around 20-25, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to keep these outdoors year round, and at least have the rhizome survive.

By the time I get all of them germinated, I'm going to have a few extras aswell, if anyone is interested.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Drooping/Wilting new growth on pawpaw

I noticed this a couple days ago on my pawpaw tree, and wasn't sure if it is normal for this plant, or if I should be concerned.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / California Gold/Ice Cream Banana
« on: August 15, 2021, 05:42:15 PM »
I've read that both California Gold and Ice Cream banana can tolerate zone 8a, and was curious if anyone here had experience getting them to fruit in colder zones. I'm hoping to get them to fruit in my area with some overwintering.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold Hardy Bananas?
« on: August 13, 2021, 12:29:17 PM »
I read that there are some bananas that are good down to zone 7-8, but wasn't able to find info on whether there are edible varieties that can grow in those zones. Are there any varieties that would do well in 7b/8a year round, or some that I could stretch to 7b/8a if I planted them against the house for extra heat during the winter? Any that work well in containers and are fairly cold tolerant?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTS/WTT Sugar Apple Seedlings 3-4"
« on: August 12, 2021, 06:18:42 PM »
I have a handful of sugar apple seedlings I'm looking to get rid of. I was just getting into annonas, and bought a lot more seeds than I realized I needed, so now I'm stuck with more plants than I need. Looking to get $8 each plus shipping (varies by quantity, starting at $8.50).

As for trades, I'm looking for anything that can survive zone 7b, or anything I can get to fruit in a pot (preferably less than 10 gallons). I'm open minded to about anything, so feel free to offer anything.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Booth cherimoya/African Pride atemoya hybrid
« on: August 11, 2021, 08:57:05 PM »
I'm not sure if this has been done before, but a couple of weeks ago I pollinated my booth with african pride pollen, and it set fruit. I'm excited to see how it turns out over the next few months, as so far it is already slightly different in appearance. It appears to have small bumps on it, smaller than the atemoya, but not flat like the booth. First image is the true booth cherimoya, second is the booth/african pride hybrid.

I have about 125 cherimoya seeds from july 2021 fruit that I'd like to trade for other tropical seeds. I'm mainly looking for garcinias, dwarf annonas, or ice cream beans, but I'm also open to other offers or simply selling them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kadsura coccinea
« on: August 02, 2021, 12:05:57 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with this plant/genus? I found some seeds for sale, and it looks pretty similar to duguetia, but maybe grows in less tropical regions? Unfortunately there's not much info available on this species from what I've seen.

I'm interested if anyone has anything that's well suited for container growth that makes tasty fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya not putting out new growth
« on: July 27, 2021, 04:51:07 PM »
I purchased a Pierce cherimoya, and it arrived in the mail about 5 weeks ago. In that time, all of the new growth has turned a light brown, and fallen off with a gentle touch. The established/full sized leaves are perfectly fine though. The issue I'm having with the tree is that, in the 5 weeks I've had it, it has yet to produce more new leaves since the previous new growth turned brown and fell off. All of the other annonas that I've had for a similar amount of time are either putting out new leaves, or flowering, meanwhile this one has done neither. The tree doesn't seem to be dying, but it's also not thriving either. Any ideas on what the issue could be?
