Tropical Fruit Discussion / California Gold/Ice Cream Banana
« on: August 15, 2021, 05:42:15 PM »
I've read that both California Gold and Ice Cream banana can tolerate zone 8a, and was curious if anyone here had experience getting them to fruit in colder zones. I'm hoping to get them to fruit in my area with some overwintering.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold Hardy Bananas?
« on: August 13, 2021, 12:29:17 PM »
I read that there are some bananas that are good down to zone 7-8, but wasn't able to find info on whether there are edible varieties that can grow in those zones. Are there any varieties that would do well in 7b/8a year round, or some that I could stretch to 7b/8a if I planted them against the house for extra heat during the winter? Any that work well in containers and are fairly cold tolerant?

Any tips on where to find these patches? I might go looking for some in Georgia.

Currently interested in pineapple guava or just about any container fruiting plant for trades.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTS/WTT Sugar Apple Seedlings 3-4"
« on: August 12, 2021, 06:18:42 PM »
I have a handful of sugar apple seedlings I'm looking to get rid of. I was just getting into annonas, and bought a lot more seeds than I realized I needed, so now I'm stuck with more plants than I need. Looking to get $8 each plus shipping (varies by quantity, starting at $8.50).

As for trades, I'm looking for anything that can survive zone 7b, or anything I can get to fruit in a pot (preferably less than 10 gallons). I'm open minded to about anything, so feel free to offer anything.

I'll probably sell off most of the seeds if it does produce a full sized fruit. Unfprtunately I don't have the space to grow out 20+ of them at the moment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Booth cherimoya/African Pride atemoya hybrid
« on: August 11, 2021, 08:57:05 PM »
I'm not sure if this has been done before, but a couple of weeks ago I pollinated my booth with african pride pollen, and it set fruit. I'm excited to see how it turns out over the next few months, as so far it is already slightly different in appearance. It appears to have small bumps on it, smaller than the atemoya, but not flat like the booth. First image is the true booth cherimoya, second is the booth/african pride hybrid.

Not sure about sugar apple, but I went to buford highway farmers market a couple weeks ago and they had cherimoya for $10/lb. They also had yellow dragon fruit, jackfruit, breadfruit, cocao pods, and frozen durian. Lots of good stuff there.

Great seller! I purchased 5 machete ice cream bean seeds, and 5 achachairu seeds, and I received 7 germinated ice cream beans and 6 achachairu seeds. Couldn't recommend this seller more!

My only complaint is that the bags weren't labeled, but after opening one up, it was obvious which was which.

I appreciate the thorough list, as it really helps me understand what I should try to grow! I'm currently doing annonas and garcinias, but I may look into jaboticabas now that you mention them. I'm also planning to try ice cream beans, but want to do a tad more reading on them first.

That's the trade off for being able to grow sugar apple in your yard year round. No paw paw :(

Do you have paw paw? Down to zone 5 and very tropical taste:)
Just put six trees in the back yard, hoping to get fruit within 3-5 years.

I have about 125 cherimoya seeds from july 2021 fruit that I'd like to trade for other tropical seeds. I'm mainly looking for garcinias, dwarf annonas, or ice cream beans, but I'm also open to other offers or simply selling them.

Congrats!

A little bit unrelated, but I noticed you were in the same zone as me, so I'm curious what tropical fruits you've been able to keep in pots. So far I'm doing annonas, but after looking around on this forum for a bit, I'm trying to expand into other types of fruit aswell.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Questions about annonas

Not sure if this helps, but I ordered a 3ft tall graft African Pride atemoya about a month ago, and it's been in a 5 gallon bucket on my back porch. In that time we've gotten almost daily rain, and temperatures have consistently been 85-90 degrees f (29.5 to 32 c), and it's been thriving. It's actually put out more flowers than anything else I have, and it already has two fruits on it. I haven't had the tree long though, so things could change in regards to how it reacts to the weather, but so far so good.

I might have to try them given the cold tolerance, as my annona garden is currently all potted due to my location, so it'll be to have something tropical-ish that doesn't have to come indoors.

Does anyone have any experience with this plant/genus? I found some seeds for sale, and it looks pretty similar to duguetia, but maybe grows in less tropical regions? Unfortunately there's not much info available on this species from what I've seen.

I'm interested if anyone has anything that's well suited for container growth that makes tasty fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cherimoya not putting out new growth
« on: July 29, 2021, 07:05:30 PM »
That's what I'm hoping. I stripped a couple leaves and they had white nubs underneath them, which I believe are the new leaves? Correct me if I'm wrong though, as I'm still new to annonas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya not putting out new growth
« on: July 27, 2021, 04:51:07 PM »
I purchased a Pierce cherimoya, and it arrived in the mail about 5 weeks ago. In that time, all of the new growth has turned a light brown, and fallen off with a gentle touch. The established/full sized leaves are perfectly fine though. The issue I'm having with the tree is that, in the 5 weeks I've had it, it has yet to produce more new leaves since the previous new growth turned brown and fell off. All of the other annonas that I've had for a similar amount of time are either putting out new leaves, or flowering, meanwhile this one has done neither. The tree doesn't seem to be dying, but it's also not thriving either. Any ideas on what the issue could be?
