Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Annona salzmannii var "Giant"

So we gotta pay for the expeditions? And how do we even know what the seeds will do when they mature? Itís too expensive for most to even try to find out. Itís not budwood weíre talking about here, itís shots in the dark. In my opinion this forum exists as a means for mostly serious growers to buy/sell/trade and share info. I try to look at every post when possible. If itís clogging up the BST board, Iím going to comment if I think the price is outrageous. Also I donít think charging astronomical prices is the way to truly preserve a species. Everyone is welcome to create a website and try to draw traffic to it. If you post on here youíre going to draw comments. Charging 75 euro for 4 seeds of a fruit with tons of seeds is just outrageous and a waste of most peopleís time to read the post. And really limits growing ďgiantĒ salzmanii to only a few wealthy growers. Even if I can afford it, Iím not paying for someone else to go traverse the world and get $1000 worth seeds off one fruit. I work very hard for a living, Iím not sure everyone knows what that means. Searching for seeds is a hobby and a vacation. Also weíre dealing with nature and thereís no type of guarantee on anything. I do not doubt the dedication at all. Itís seeds hunters choice to get it in the hands of people or not. If you truly cared about preserving species though you wouldnít charge so much.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB black sapote and canistel fruit

I tried 3 canistel before I found one I liked. Make sure you try some good varieties. Still looking for a black sapote that tastes like something! Lara farms is shipping fruit now, sells out fast though. Need to order as soon as it gets reposted.

Iím considering setting up a small swimming pool in the greenhouse and cycling the water like you would an aquarium. You could use any container and any amount of water. Maybe add some type of small hardy fish + crawfish/crabs/etc, and adjust water pH to majority of your plants likings. Once cycled, can put on auto fill from rainwater catchment system or let city water sit a few days then add to big tank. It will keep humidity up and you would have a never ending stream of good water. Can get a cheap heat pump (small spa heater etc.) and it would assuredly keep the greenhouse temps up in winter. Would plumb just like a large swimming pool, drain lines to pump to filter/heater to return lines. Have to make sure drain intake is clean. Maybe a pre filter like guys use in ponds. Can also have all types of cool water plants and put drip irrigation or flood beds on timers or hand water as needed. Been wanting to implement this for years, going to do it this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Full sun plantings
« on: February 08, 2022, 09:21:20 PM »
We got to 26 for 4 hrs this year but thatís fairly uncommon. Usually a couple light frosts. House and fence block the north wind, so it stays a bit warmer in front. Not worried about bandits as everybody here assumes everybody is armed:D   Mulberries are an option. Zero experience with mangos. Highly allergic to poison ivy and learned mangos = Urisiol the hard way. Not completely opposed though, theyíre beautiful. Ideally Iíd like some nice dooryard evergreen options that can shade some jabos and eugenias and under canopy plants. Summer sun can be harsh

Pomegranates are great. Iíd like to stay away from deciduous if possible. Iíve got a loquat and sapodilla that have done well. Considering more of those and possibly mango and open to suggestions

Iím planting a couple new areas in front yard, I have some protected areas that get full all day sun though. Temps can be 100F in August and September. Looking to support some under canopy plants. What are my best options for max sun tolerance and maybe some wind tolerance?

Could you just cut a diagonal and hammer say 1Ē pvc down a few feet and feed through the pipe? You might have to pull out and clean a few times with water hose...
Iíve seen people deep root feed big live oak trees here with fertilizer spikes a few feet deep, seems to help the older trees
