Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does this look like Psidium Longipetiolatum?
« on: September 29, 2022, 12:49:19 PM »
This is a fruit I got off a relatively cold hardy guava that I bought as Psidium Longipetiolatum. I had gotten another plant of this species from jabo45 at some point that is a bit macroscopically different. The latter plant having more rounded leaves. This fruit is from the original plant. Got it here but I don't remember  from who. Fruit was good so no complaints. Similar color inside as outside. What y'all think?

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / American persimmon seeds
« on: September 24, 2022, 04:08:07 PM »
Have tons of fresh 2022 American persimmon seeds available for sale or trade. 10 seeds for $3 but if you for 100 seeds I'll do $20. That's a $10 discount for the bulk quantity based off proportionate price. Price of whatever seed quantity plus applicable shipping.

I'll be willing to make trades too. I'd really love to try a quality pawpaw fruit this year while they are in season. If the seeds from me don't completely offset what the prospective trader needs to ship a fruit we can work out a partial payment deal. Willing to trade for other stuff as well. Make offers! I'm into all things edible and medicinal from fruit to veggies and herbs. Particularly looking for self heal herb, mushroom herb, lemon verbena, mounjean(spelling?) tea herb, burdock, elechampane, feverfew, anise, chervil, echinacea, etc. Thanks for any offers!

Would be awesome in the case of seeds to get a whole fruit to try. However seedlings or seeds fine too. Looking for a friend. Don't really matter what type she just wants some seeds or a plant. Sold all mine a few days before she asked about them.

Thanks! DG

Maybe not the most appropriate spot to post but there will be some fruit trees in the mix. Anyways I'll be a vendor this Saturday at the Wewahitchka, FL tupelo honey festival selling all manner of permaculture and edible plant species. If there are any panhandle locals come check us out! Mention seeing this ad and receive a free 4" potted plant with other purchase. Tons of varieties available. I'll try to put up a list later on today. Otherwise not the biggest festival in the world but lots of vendors with all kinds of crafts. More this year than ever too.

Thanks! DG

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Nut trees for the south
« on: February 16, 2022, 12:18:51 PM »
Anyone got any dormant southern pecan, black walnut, or other nut varieties that will work in the FL panhandle? Like young seedling trees.

Really want to get some jujube trees going on my homestead. None of the ones I got in the past made it. Suppose moving root runners or seedling trees while dormant is best. Root runners of already mature trees would be ideal but anything works. Hit me up!

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / Low chill Asian pear
« on: February 05, 2022, 11:00:50 AM »
Have a nice rootstock grown out from a grafted variety I had bought awhile ago. Even before allowing that rootstock to grow out whatever variety it was on top wasn't doing good at all here. Can't remember what variety I bought. Just a bare root tree bought from a roadside vendor for $10. Now that I got a nice bit of rootstock growth I can cut the other old scion off and graft the rootstock with a better variety for here in the FL panhandle. Preferably a variety with less than 400 chill hours but hopefully  250 or less. Anybody out there got scions available for a low chill Asian pear?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fig tree die back
« on: February 02, 2022, 12:15:49 PM »
Does anybody have an idea why a fig tree or in my case three different trees of different varieties keep dying back to the ground in winter? I'm in the FL panhandle so it definitely doesn't get too cold here. However this has happened every year for 3 years. No clue why this would occur when there's other figs in the yard doing fine and all over town. Also two if the three are rooted pieces from local trees that don't freeze or die back. What the heck is up here?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Cold hardy avocado seeds
« on: February 01, 2022, 05:10:41 PM »
Know there has been others asking but I need to ask too.

Anyways a kind member sent some Wilma avocado seeds that I did plant already. However I would be greatly happy to procure some more seeds from any of the cold hardiest varieties. If anyone out there has some please hit me up! Prefer varieties that can withstand temps of 25F or even better 20F or less. Might as well have cold hardy rootstock for the hardy types I will graft onto them later. It can get into the teens here every so often. Want not to loose any trees if that occurs.

I attempted grafting some rootstock I have now today and will be trying the rest over the weekend. I realized I'm gonna need vastly more rootstock in the future to try again not only to create my own trees but to have some to sell/giveaway down the road too.  I probably didn't do the greatest grafts today so it's possible I will fail and perhaps kill those rootstocks anyways.

Want seeds of varieties:
Opal
Wilma
Brazos Belle
Poncho
Joey
Lila
Fantastic
Mexicola Grande
And/or others of like cold hardiness

Thanks for your help! DG

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting avocado
« on: February 01, 2022, 04:56:35 PM »
Have a few questions about grafting avocado. A generous member sent some scions that I attempted grafting a few today. Tried two cleft grafts on side branches of a larger rootstock and left the top growing tip on that plant as a measure to hopefully keep the tree alive in general if the grafts fail. Would cut the top off later if the grafts are successful. Unfortunately not sure I did a great job but we'll see.

On two other smaller rootstocks I tried to side veneer graft near the bottom of the rootstock. Left the growing tips on the trees also as a measure to not loose the rootstock if the grafts fail. Unfortunately not sure I did too good with these grafts either. Can't get better unless you try right?

That was a general overview of what I tried today for informational purposes as a prelude to my questions. I'm certainly much more experienced and therefore more comfortable with the cleft grafting. I'm not that experienced a grafted nonetheless. I feel the side grafting is likely a better option to success or at the least to save the rootstock if a graft fails. My major question is on my remaining rootstocks should I just cleft graft somewhere on the main trunk of the seedling trees cutting off the main growth tips and hoping for the best? Figure in the event of a failed graft it's more likely the rootstock will die off too right? The rootstock are healthy enough but maybe not the healthiest in the world if you see my implications there. If a were to cut off the main growth tip and still graft above a side branch would that be better? Leave something for the rootstock to photosynthesis with or would the side branch steal too much resources from the scion? Obviously the scion would become the main stem tip though so maybe I'm wrong there??? Would cut the side branch off if the scion was successful. Rather not kill all my rootstock in the event of failures. What's y'alls wisdoms on this? I will attempt grafting the rest of the scions this weekend when I'm off work again and give the time to get some replies from a variety of people.

Thanks for your help! DG
