This is an update of how the trees are doing. It seems as if the caterpillar destruction was a blessing in disguise as the plants have never grown this vigorously before.
Many are over 5 feet. It may be of interest in that these plants were planted in lava rock that only had 4-6 inches top soil. I had a hole ram come and punch three holes in each planting location. The seedlings were planted in the center of the three holes. I also should note that this vigorous growth may be due to the continuous rain we've had over the last several months.

In any case, Luc was right these are tough guys. Thanks all for your past help.

does anyone know where the eggs are laid?
if on ground should not be hard to control, but if on foliage will be a challenge on large trees!!

About three and half feet tall. Have been in the sun at least two years. About three and half years old. Very slow growing but will come out with sudden bursts of colored foliage. Have put a lot of effort into the plants and don't want to lose them now. Thanks for informing me about their strength.

Still, if anybody has any idea of what happened, I would like to correct it.

Thank you very much Luke for all of your help.

What can be done? Never seen this kind of damage on any of my plants on my place. Just began earlier this month. Any help greatly appreciated.
