Very interesting--that does sound like a good variety. Are you interested in selling it, or do you remember where you got it?

27
I have a couple of unnamed seedlings growing well, but I haven't been able to track down any of the ~5 or so named varieties. Does anyone have any experience with these or know where to find them? Is there much difference between the varieties?

Did you find any sources of these names cultivars? I'd be very interested if so!

29
Fruit are about 2 weeks from ripening here in Austin...I can get seeds again this year if you still need some. Just PM me.

30
Got my pads in the mail--they're huge and look great--thanks a lot!

31
What is Inga nobilis like? I'm not finding any information on the fruit. Thanks!

I would love cuttings or seeds as well--please do post if you make cuttings or offer seeds!

33
I can collect a few if you like. elouicious is in Houston, so those trees are accustomed to 50 inches of rain per year, whereas the trees in Austin are accustomed to much less rain (32 inches of rain per year) and slightly colder winter temps (zone 8b vs 9a).

I have some 2 and 3 year old seedlings but no seeds left. You might try The John Fairey Garden--they're who I got my seeds and a few seedlings from. There's an adult tree that just drops its fruit on the ground every year.

35
Thanks for the seeds--mine all germinated either in the mail or within 2 days of planting.

36
The seeds arrived today and look great--thank you so much. The extras were much appreciated. I had never tasted a lemon drop mangosteen before!

None of the Ugni species are very appropriate for growing in Texas. It gets above 95 and the whole plant will die--not get damaged, not lose leaves, die completely. Unless you have an air conditioned greenhouse I'd give up...I'm in Austin and have killed many before giving up.

38
I just walked down the hill and picked some dry fruits off last year's inflorescence. I got 12 seeds from the dried fruits. The seeds are tough little round spheres. My guess is that they're viable.
I also have a medium-sized offset that I could send, but they'd be a medium sized box (24in square) and I'm not sure whether they'd get intercepted in the mail to PR.
You could start with the seeds and ask me for a pup if they don't germinate...up to you.

39
I was leaning more towards B. balanse as well. These are very easy to propogate by offset (pup) so that I've never bothered to save any seeds. I guess it might be tricky getting a plant to you in the mail. I'll watch for seed this year. They usually bloom in late summer in Texas.

40
Does your plant look like mine? I have difficulty distinguishing between B. balansae and B. pinguin, and I'd like to see what other people are calling by those names.

The fruit just arrived and they are great, thank you!

I don't have plants to sell, but just some experience to share: I am also not good at germinating seeds, generally, but I bought some from Luc on here last year and got 100% germination and they're all still looking good. The seeds are huge and the seedlings are very easy to keep alive as long as the soil is kept nice and acidic. Don't be afraid to start some seeds!

43
I am interested as well.

I had a few people who wanted Texas persimmon seeds and now I have a couple of leftover seed packages. I collected these from a very nice large tree in my area.

The fruit are the size of a large grape but very sweet. You squeeze the skin and the pulp squirts out, so there is no peeling required. The trees grow slowly though and are dioecious. I have never tried to grow them because it is relatively easy to find the fruit around the county. I am in Zone 8b and we get around 34 in rain per year, but I have seen these growing west of here where they get less, like 28 in rain per year. The water here is ridiculously alkaline (pH = 8) and they thrive in it. The fruit always ripen when it is over 100 degrees in August.

Let me know if you are interested. I like unusual species from the Myrtales, if you have something to trade.

Another week and the ones in my area will be ripe. I have several people wanting seeds this year.

47
I can't help with seedlings, but Trade Winds Fruit did have seeds last month--you might give them a try.

I agree with Radoslav: except for junglesop I have gotten >90% germination within 6mo from all Annona species, no need for treatments used on difficult seeds.

Seeds arrived looking good, thanks!

I had a really bad experience with Miami Fruit. My large box of soursops came almost completely crushed. There were three large fruit in the box and they only had those thin flexible foam sleeves around them--that level of padding might work for apricots or nectarines but definitely not for 4lb fruit. Only the one fruit sitting on top of the other two was intact.
I photographed the unopened box to show that several cups of liquid had leaked out after the UPS guy dropped it off. The address, tracking number, etc were all visible in this high quality photo. I then removed the smashed fruit and placed them in a large bowl and photographed them. I also provided screenshots of the PayPal receipt for the order.
I contacted Miami Fruit describing what happened and they requested the time-stamped photos, etc. After a few days they got back with me saying that my last order was over a month ago and that they would not help. Apparently when I checked out I had done it as a guest, so they were looking at my previous order history...this was an understandable mistake except that I had provided them with all of the requested time-stamped info, my PayPal information, as well as all the readable data on the package. They were being very obtuse and stonewalled me but kept answering my emails with lots of happy, chirpy exclamation-point filled messages.
I'm not ordering from them again. The customer service experience was really terrible, and the last couple of orders of fruit were not good (mameys -- not sweet, the last two of three soursop orders were also not good, but boy was that first one good!). In their last email they faulted me for not sending them photos the day the fruit arrived--I contacted them the next day--this was ridiculous goalpost moving since previously they were only requiring time-stamped photos to show the damage. Just a huge waste of time.

Anyone have any other domestic US sources of Annona fruit and/or sapote-type fruit?
