Too big for Arican Pride?
« on: May 02, 2014, 02:38:16 AM »

I noticed in the market today atemoyas being sold as African Pride being in almost 2 size classes coming from different farms and appearing to be 2 different varieties. The larger type as in the pictures is cleaner, more irregularly shaped and routinely 4 to 5lbs.The smaller is more conical, regular and most around 1 to 2lbs.It makes me wonder if the larger type may actually have a bit of pinks mammoth crossing in its background or is it just an environmental thing.

My question to seasoned Annona campaigners is does the atemoya in the picture which is a fairly typical specimen, look like an African pride?

African Pride has 'spikes'. That just looks like a well pollinated mammoth or something else from that line...

BMc it is not smooth enough or irregular enough for a mammoth and definitely not a Hilary or Paxton and not in the ball park of a gefner.I can see some African Pride traits but yes not as spikey as the small ones sold as AP.

I see  a lot of half way looking fruit around I suspect are from seedling trees or from seedlings selected for grafting and just pinned with a known variety name.

Fruit shows a big influence of annona squamosa.
So, maybe fruit is from seedling originated from seed of atemoya fruit pollinated by squamosa.

Rad it is a pretty typical atemoya really and not obviously closer to the sugar apple side of the family tree.

The top part is typical of an African Pride but the rest looks like a Geffner/Bradley kind of mix.
