Who has fruiting Marang ?
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:02:28 PM »
Where do the fruits appear ? Today I noticed some ball like things on the tips of all the branches of a 6 year old tree . I had to look straight up into the sun and the branches are at least 6 meters from the ground so I am not 100% sure it's fruit ....

Six years seems to be correct for fruiting from seed. Send some fotos of the "possible" fruits

Dont have a fruiting tree, but can add that they do fruit from or near tips. A little like breadfruit.
I have found a few volunteers that have popped up that came from a spectacular marang. So maybe in a decade I will have a fruiting tree.  ;D

That's a good sign. Sounds like female flowers. Mine are flowering right now also. Have fruited for several years. If you take photo can give positive id. Yes BMc is right, they fruit in similar way to breadfruit.

Six meters is already pretty tall. If its a good variety i think it should be fruiting already. I know of a tree that was maybe 5 meters tall loaded with fruit.. I would probably top the tree if you haven't already. I've seen many marang fruits that rot because they are too high up to harvest.. I'd like to see how they harvest in the Philippines..  Since they don't fruit near or on the trunk it's not exactly an easy fruit to harvest.

Definitely a flower. If they are first flowers to appear than probably male flowers. On all artocarpus the male flowers come out first. But that's ok because that's a sign you will soon have female flowers, and you need that male pollen also to get fruit.
