Fall 2014: Tell which mango varieties bloom when.
« on: November 02, 2014, 11:04:37 AM »
@ Trully Tropical, in eastern Delray Beach:

'Dwarf Hawaiian' has a few blooms already finished, and about a third of the branches on both trees have emerging bloom spikes;

'Rosa' has many bloom spikes just starting to show;

'Julie' has a few bloom spikes starting (unusually early).

I have 2 big namdocmai-green tree's and one of them has 1 branche blooming right now. It had another branche blooming 3 months ago but didn't set fruit.

I also have a branch of chockanan with fruitlets on 1 ndm-green tree but the other ndm-green tree with chockanan grafted on it still didn't bloom.

namdocmai can bloom offseason is what i read, the strange thing is it only blooms on a single branche in my garden.

Yesterday i was in a nursery where they sold Golden Queen mangotree's and some of them were in full bloom. Those grafted tree's were only 3 feet (1 metre) tall. I bought one which didn't have flowers. They were kept under a roof out of the sun so it amazed me some could bloom. I read that Golden Queen (from Taiwan) can also bloom several times a year and it is a mix of namdocmai with another mango.

No blooms in my neck of the woods. Just some fat, swollen buds on some.

My 12g Nam Doc Mai in 9B  Socal is currently holding 3 fruits that are yellowing up now....it set about 20 fruits 4-5 months ago, which I thinned myself to 3.

It also sent several blooms 2-3 months ago and I removed the panicles shortly after the fruitlets set....So depending on the Weather... Without a doubt these 3 Mangos tree ripening as we speak are definately gong to be November Mangos. The Fruitlets that set 3 months ago that were removed could have been February/March Mangos...but I doubt they could have matured in our Socal Winter...

None the less I think the Nam Doc Mai has the potential of setting multiple crops early and late.

Clay - first year fruiting and flowering are not necessarily the tree's normal behavior over
the course of its life....I will be surprised, but pleasantly so, if the NDM becomes a multiple
bearer in our climate.  But do let us know how your first NDM tastesary!

Now, is this still in a pot or in the ground - can't keep track of all your trees...oh...
and how about a picture of it!

Gary,

 I'll start keeping notes on the production patterns of my babies until they mature. I really hope this Nam Doc Mai is capable of multiple crops...

I'll take pictures this weekend...This time change leaves me in the dark for the entire week in between leaving for week and coming home from work.... My Na Doc Mai is a beauty... It's putting out 1 last flush on the exact branch thats holding fruit....its a monster i tell you.

NO blooms whatsoever on any of my mango trees...some new growths and some small tiny growth bumps   :(...but this is  normal for me. I won't see any buds/blooms before December or January...just long enough for them to be nipped by the first freeze :'( :'(

Having said that we've had some cool nights the last several weeks...maybe it will surprise me and bloom a little earlier?

Inflorescence starting on Dot and Gary. Still a while away before the  actual bloom. The  other 17+ varieties are dormant

I see keo sawoei and keaw mango's on the market all the time everywhere. They are eaten green but i guess they just bloomed naturally. Keaw is cheap, keo savoei not. So i think keaw is an offseason bloomer. I have seeds from them and will try to graft onto it.

Simon

is this a regular time for the NDM to bloom? I just put mine in the ground  this year so I know all of it' stages right now are kind of all over the place.

Visited a local nursery today here in Freeport, looks like all of the Carries, just imported with other Mangoes from  Pine Island Nursery, have buds swollen and breaking into flower. All others are just chillin'. The buds on my Carrie and Tommy Atkins at home are only just beginning to show signs of swelling. They usually come out fully to play around Christmas-ish
