Update your profile with what fruit trees you have
« on: February 08, 2015, 06:54:52 AM »
Ladies and Gents,

May I suggest updating your profile to show specifically what fruit trees you have.  This is a good way to promote trading and expanding of collections.  I can't tell you how many times someone has mentioned a mango and then I click on their profile and there is no list of what they have.  Take a moment and catalogue your collection.  You will not only have the benefit of showing others what is up for grabs but also have a very handy and accessible list in case a tag falls off at your house or you are at a nursery and can't remember if you have this variety or that one.

  Admin,
Is it possible to make peoples lists searchable?

Kindest regards,
The Marquis De Mango

Yes good idea!

It also would be nice if you can add your "wanted list" so others can immediatly see if they can do a possible trade.

to make your tree list first log onto forum
THEN
go to profile
THEN TO
forum profile

(which also can be found at)
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile

you see an empty box called FRUIT TREES

In that blank box you put in your tree list in the kind of code this forum uses for replies so>>>>>

IMPORTANT
To generate this forum code you pick any forum post to reply to
BUT
in that reply box you use the formatting tool to make your tree list come out correctly (in code form)

when done with your tree list you copy and paste into "empty box called FRUIT TREES"

press save button
you are done

(hope this is understandable)

Great description Zands.  I also recently discovered that if you go to "members" on the top bar and then click "search for members" then click the arrow next to "search by fruit trees" and you have the ability to search people fruit trees.  For instance, if I wanted to see who had a Cushman mango, I just type "Cushman" and viola . . . a list of members you can potentially do a deal with.

Update your lists people.  It will open the door to many more trades

Good move.  It makes sense for anyone who wants to trade to have an up to date tally of what's up for grabs.   I know when I am looking for a mango I don't have, I use the search feature.  It almost inevitably comes up with Squam or Harry but the feature is still useful

If Sheehan had a nickel for every time he said that, he could buy fairchild farms.   Seriously though, I count 53 that you have that I don't.  A look at a list like that keeps me pressing forward in collecting.  I'll never catch you but the fun in chasing should keep this hobby alive for years to come.  Take a bow Squam, that is a collection that legends are made of.

Yes, it's a very good idea to get your plant's inventory updated, it's beneficial to the poster as well as to other members in this forum, as was already stated.

As an alternate, I just listed my plant inventory/wanted list in docs.google.com's spreadsheet, then pasted it's url into the URL box of the Modify Profile page. To open it, one would need to do a copy and paste. (This box was probably originally intended to be filled with your home page's url-if you have one, so this method may not be acceptable to the Moderators.)

To make it simpler, and probably more convenience also since one needs only do one click right there at the forum's discussion page without going through the steps to get to the Modify Profile page, I pasted my spreadsheet's url right below my "Signature"; just like some people here do it already, to show their home page or their custom signatures...

Cheers!

edit: make the link shareable

A link defeats the purpose of the list because it won't be searched. The idea is to be able to search member profiles for the fruit one is interested in.

Yes that's what i was thinking as well.

And searching only works when many members fill in that list. The way it works now not many members will do it i guess. :(

Try using the listing functions in toolbar you see in the reply box. They are under where it says "font size" and to their right is a red icon with an arrow in the middle. Toggle back and forth with the red icon...easier to make your list this way. But then finally you have to toggle the reddish icon back to the "forum coding" scheme. Copy and paste this "forum coding" to the correct place in your profile

Listing functions>>>

  • mango
  • avocado
  • carambola

and

  • mango
  • carambola
  • grapes

???  my head is spinning.  Seems like creating a list should be pretty simple, yet not the case.  When I am ready I will check out your podcast, zands, to figure out this riddle.

If you want bold  [ b ]Put bold text between these but remove the spaces in the brackets[ /b ]

[ u ] Put the underlined text between these but remove the spaces in the brackets [ /u ]

To start a new row hit this but remove the spaces between the brackets [ br ]

He's explaining it in a confusing way. The markup is based on HTML syntax. Quote this post to see the syntax for a bulleted list, then just use that syntax when creating the tree list, is what he is recommending.

  • First item
  • Second item
  • etc.

I've also got one.  It is one of those new varieties from Pine Island and available at Benders Grove.  Here is a link to the original discussion:

On a side note - Update your profiles with a current list of you plants people!  How else will other members find you and offer you stuff you don't have.  It also gives the added benefit of keeping an online catalogue of what your collection consists of.  You never know when you will be at a nursery and not remember if you have something or not.   Advertise your wares folks, it is just good business.  Marketing 101    It takes 5 mins and the benefits are well worth the minimal time spent.
