Can i grow these fruits here?
« on: April 10, 2015, 02:37:21 AM »
Hello guys, inlive in south italy, here we have a subtropical climate, sometimes in winter we see some frozen in early morning, only 2 times we had under 0 temperature, but just a case, in the past rarely we went  under +1. Summer instead is very hot.
.. Anyway there's cold wind from the northern europe.
I want to grow outside in my farm black sapote, macadamia nuts, averrhoa carambola... I ve the opportunity to buy plants taller than 2meters (only macadamia is about 1meter)

What do you think?

I think they'll be fine except the carambola.  Depending on the variety, you should have no problem growing that one in a pot.

Hey Viking, you think a black sapote will handle cold better than a carambola?

I have also found black sapote to be marginally hardier than the carambola but that may be just where I am.

Yes black sapote is definitely more cold resistant than carambola.

carambola will work but keep it in  a pot that can be put in a winter protected place. Carambola grow fast and produce fruit very quickly. Why? Because the tree does not have to send too many sugars to the carambola fruit which is on the watery side but refreshing/////// It is not a sticky sweet fruit that makes your hands all sticky and juice covered like mango and others

People have grown macadamia in california where it's about the same climate as what you described and they do well.

How much heat does black sapote need to ripen after setting fruit?

Andalusia, Sicily, Greece yes. South Italy and France in GH. Too cold. There is an Italian  from the south that's experimenting with tropical I think his forum name is Pizza check out his post.

I disagree.  If his temps don't drop under 0°C, then he is fine.  I still wouldn't risk carambola outside a pot.

If you decide to get the carambola, I recommend the Kari.  Looks nice in a pot and can be kept small.

White sapote will definitely be OK regardless.

I will definitely buy carambola and keep it in pot inside the greenhouse... Black sapote outside (usually we don't go under zero)  if it didn't fruit in pot as carambola.

How tall became the BZ?
