Black spots on young mango leaves
« on: August 03, 2015, 11:17:20 AM »
Hello,

I have planted 13 grafted mango seedlings of different varieties at the end of April this year; they are growing well. Since the end of June, monsoon/rain started and it is raining almost everyday. Recently the new leaves of some of them have developed those black spots. The new terminal buds of those same plants have also turned black and died. Does anybody know what kind of disease it is and what kind of treatment is recommended to save the plants from this?

Below are the photos showing those spots on 2 different plants.

Thank you very much in advance for your guidance.

Sobars

I guess it's trying to say 'stop the rain'. Seriously I don't know if too much rain in tropical climate is an issue for mango. Is it a native variety or from other dry climate region?

This looks eerily similar to bacterial black spot.

Looking at the mango field guide...
Probably is bacterial black spot.

Not Stigmina leaf spot (symptoms similar to bacterial black spot) because of the described blackening and death of the terminal buds (tip dieback).

Thank you Rob, Har, Warren, Sapote for your suggestions.
I went through the link and yes it looks similar like bacterial black spot.

All those mango plants were bought from the Regional Fruit Research Station, Vengurla. This is the research station who has developed some nice mango varieties, including the Sindhu (so called seedless), Ratna and the newly released Konkan Samrat. So i believe the disease was not coming with the planting material but got infected at home after planting or during rain from nearby mango trees.
http://www.dbskkv.org/Research/Varieties_Fruit-Crops.html

Below are the Indian varieties
1. Kesar
2. Ratna
3. Sindhu
4. Amrapali
5. Dasheri
6. Payari
7. Goa Mankur
8. Dudh Pedha

Below are the foreign varieties
9.   Tommy Atkins (USA)
10. Keitt (USA)
11. Kingfon (dont know the country of origin)
12. Maya (i believe it is from Israel, but not 100% sure)
13. Lily (dont know the country of origin)

14. Konkan Samrat - this is the new hybrid released by this university in 2014, its a hybrid of Alphonso and Tommy Atkins. Very difficult to get the plants at this moment due to limited planting material availability which is made available mostly to nursery owners.

Unfortunately i am away from home (another 2 months to go) so don't know exactly which of the above plants are affected, but i have asked my wife to check the labels and let me know. According to that documentation, Keitt could be one of them.

So, as suggested in that document, a copper based fungicide should work, correct?
What about using the Copper Sulfate and if that is going to be effective then how many grams / liter of water and the frequency of spraying?
What about using any systemic fungicide like Bavistin (Carbendazim)? Will it be more efficient and long lasting than a copper based contact fungicide? Proportion/frequency?

Thanks for your help.
Kind regards, Sobars

Ok, for the list of mangoes that has those spots.

First picture is of Tommy Atkins

Second picture is of Dudh Pedha

Third picture (attached below) is of Maya

Fourth picture (attached below) is of Goa Mankur. This has different issue, all those new leaves are cut and fallen on the ground. Normally the insects eat the new leaves but this is strange that they were just cut.

Any idea/suggestion to follow?

I don't see any of these cut fallen leaves. If none of them were not consumed then might be you have a little kid around?

The cut leaves look like exactly that, cut leaves. Edges are straighter than any insect eaten edge I've see on any of my plants.
Agree with Sapote, probably a child wandering around with a pair of scissors.

Hi Sobars
As your plants are not big and tall you could try copper sulphate or Copper oxide but there are more efficient products. Try to contact the Vengurla people or ICAR in Goa. They will orient you
