African Black Plum (Vitex doniana)
« on: September 29, 2012, 06:47:59 AM »
I put some of these vitex plants in the ground today. I was wondering if anyone has tasted this black plum and how it is?

It is worth growing Oscar. Fruit is around 3cm and sweet berry like in taste. Notice that each nut can produce several seedlings; they can take time to germinate.

Does anyone have an idea how long these take to fruit?

Mine are 15-20 feet tall and have never flowered or fruited. I'm guessing they are 8-10 years old. Very healthy looking and vigorous, not sure what the probllem is. I have 3 trees.

OK, mine are a bit younger than yours and also no flowers or fruit yet.

As you say, they are pretty vigorous and healthy-looking although in my winter they start looking really scraggly. They bounce back in the springtime.

Just wondering if it prefers more infertile soil to get it to fruit. Ours grow naturally on quite poor soil.

Perhaps you are right. But soil is not so great here. I'm thinking more likely they don't like the constant rain that we get? Do you have a long dry period in your area of Uganda?

It could be we have about three to four months dry season here in Northern Uganda.

A fruiting mangosteen in Copenhagen would be  great challenge.
