Mango Family Tree-Need Feedback/Review
« on: August 24, 2020, 07:57:18 AM »
I would like to introduce everyone to the Mango Family Tree.. Please be kind and review and make suggestions..

These are based on guesses and what the Zills and others believe is the seedling or propagating parent. This was a fun project.

I have linked most to a source that has photos and descriptions of the mango variety.

I have gotten approval from the website owner to link to the site.

I would like to see some sort of evidence backing up the claim that Alphonso is possibly the parent of Julie.

Yes really hard on eyes, I had to enlarge many times but when I finally saw the lineage lines and varieties it feels overwhelming. Where did Julie come from if not Alphonso, any other Indian mango? Probably crossed with Stringies from Jamaica?
Also interesting to know Pickering has Irwin and Turpentine in it. The flow chart certainly needs validation and some correction from the experts here but I think it does feel like someone has put a lot of work into this and I highly appreciate this love for the mangoes.

I liked it .
Pretty interesting

I will explain a little confusion though
, and how I found the answers

I am only saying this with the most enthusiasm , and not any negativity
I did enjoy what you have done as someone that enjoys reading on plant , and grape progenies myself.

After your post it would of been nice to link up the variety page of the Site that gave permission
to search these easier

Mango Tree PDF

After showing the PHP
https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/mangos

This is what I started writing before I realized I could of went to the variety list
I did quickly search the site, but I missed that, and focused on the PHP.

---------------------------------
--------------------------------------

A lot of clicking though
I would of liked to open in new tabs
 to look at multiple mangos
to save time, and scroll through each one.
On individual pages more quickly . On the PHP

I did search on tropical Acres farms  (site) though
(what your PHP was named )
I searched

mango tree family
Popped up some
https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/search-results-page/mango%2520tree%2520family

Until I realized they had a Variety page

I do Respect  all the work you put into this
Just pointing out of people not familiar or not familiar for some time
(as I have read the history of that farm place before many months ago,
but do not grow mangos so may have skipped that section on varieties or forgot
how to Navigate the site -- like I said focused on the PHP ..)

(like I said It can Look at that, and open up Multiple tabs on Tropical acres
and read the links faster )

I read up on brooks  by the way interesting it's the second mango around 1910's

Here is a post I made a few years ago about the possible origins of Julie: http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=12

There has never been any evidence that is a descendant of Alphonso. It is also most likely not from Jamaica.

I may have not been familiar with that site
older pictures looked like I saw them some time back
Thanks though.

If I were tasting mangos or wanting to breed with them
I sure would read about the different ones ,
but looks interesting for others , but maybe some day.

Interesting forum discussion from 2012. Sheehan, did you ever hear back from the author of the article who claimed Julie was from Reunion? Many Indians travelled to the Caribbean in the early 1800s for the sugarcane plantations and i won't be surprised if it was a monoembryonic seed from brought from a fruit from India at that time. But i think Alphonso was discovered much later so Julie most likely existed before Alphonso.

I'm reading a book on Keys history and an account from 1874 said they were growing (among other things) mangos, guavas, avocados, and sapodilla. I wonder what varieties of mangos, etc., they were growing then and from whence they came.

You could do another version with bigger text, and a picture of the mango might be ok

Thanks for the feedback I made the text bigger I am looking at adding Images or info about Poly vs Mono seed type or Time of year the tree produces fruit.

Chances are, that many or most of the mangos in the Keys in the 1800's were Chupeta mangos from Cuba;  later these were re-named: Turpentine.

Awesome!  Thank-you for sharing.  I know that you put in a lot of effort on this...if it was easy, I'm sure it would have been done by now.  Thank-you again.

I am surprised at how central haden, keitt, kent, carrie and tommy atkins are. I am not a fan of any of those.

Other descendents of 'Bombay' are 'Jakarta' and 'Zill'80'.  [The first name for Jakarta mango was "Bombay seedling."]

I believe that Tete Nene/Dwarf Hawaiian is a descendant of Julie.

From my own notes (largely based on the tropical acres farms site):

Dot: "Originally it was speculated to be a Carrie seedling, though USDA pedigree analysis estimated it was from ‘Zill’, to which it also probably bears more resemblance in terms of shape and ripening traits."

While Edward and Gary are the parents of Coconut Cream, they're also the parents of "Seacrest/Triple Sec" and of the appropriately named "Edgar"

E-4/Sugarloaf has both Edward and Pettigrew (or possibly Gary) in its parentage.

TAF lists Cecilove as a cross between Carrie and ZINC and Jakarta as Kent and (likely) Bombay. Also, Kent is a hybrid between Brooks and Haden.

Zill's O-15 is from Jakarta

Spirit of '76 is a natural cross between Haden and Zill

This kind of project is very worthwhile and it was well done. Haden being so central makes sense. Maybe the title should reflect hat is is mainly the Floridian branch of the family. One for Australia would look really different with KP at the centre of all locally developed varieties with numerous Asian and Floridian mangoes just appearing.
