Assistance identifying papaya variety
« on: September 05, 2020, 04:57:56 PM »

Hey everyone,

Got this papaya at Martin's grocery in WV. My first papaya. The flavor is slightly sweet, maybe a 3/10, and faintly musky. No prevailing flavors besides that. Any ideas what variety it could be? Also, do they taste better when grown at home vs bought at grocery store?

That's what I assumed. I tried local blackberries and raspberries for the first time this summer and my mind was blown. I can't even imagine how much better grocery store tropical fruits must taste when eaten locally.

Could be anything and fruit are people variable. Looks like a bisex 'red' with some solo parentage but seeds are bigger and blacker than regular solo types. Many commercial varieties are only known by letter and number combinations. Is there any 'nasturtium' (hydrocarbon) taint?

Bisex and female fruit of the same variety are also very different with bisex fruit usually sweeter, more orange and elongate. In broadleaf papaya (paw paw) this is extreme with female fruit being quite plain yellow and bisex being elongate yellow and tastier.

The most common type is Caribbean red. Store bought ones are picked early and they don't taste as good. I reccomend sprinkling lemon or lime juice as the acidity helps balance the flavors out.
