Jim Bacon Avocado
« on: January 27, 2013, 12:29:15 AM »
Hey guys,

I picked up a 5G Jim Bacon avocado today at homedepot. I never seen this variety at local nurseries, so i think it is rare that's why i bought it  ;D. Jim Bacon is about 3ft tall and a lot of flowers are coming out. Just curious if anybody growing/know about this variety? Only information i can find is from LaVerne site. Jim bacon is a seedling of Bacon, it has better frost resistance than bacon (frost is not a problem in my area), also the fruits are slightly larger than Bacon.

Anybody know the taste of Jim Bacon compare to hass, or bacon, fuerte etc...?

Is your Jim Bacon grafted?

I wonder if this is a creation of LaVernes and how its finding were tested/monitored.  If they are grafting it, I wonder what rootstock they are using and just what temps can it endure before damage occurs.

I noticed their site also has "Little Cado" as a variety with a trademark designation next to its name (TM# 50552 -- Sheehan, do your due diligence...) while there is no such designation next to Jim Bacon.

I wish we had them here in Florida. Harvest is October-January when it is colder and you want to eat more fats. Their avocado page is clean and informative which gives me confidence in their operation

I've heard that fruit quality is not as good as bacon but then again alot of people don't like bacon because it can be stringy sometimes. But comes down to what you can grow in your environment,micro-climate , soil etc. Good luck with Jim. ;)

@Bsbullie
Everything avocado trees sold from Laverne are grafted.

Jim should have better taste than bacon. As long as its not watery taste in fine with it. Guess i have to grow it out and do a taste test myself.

Whats the flower type of Jim? B like bacon?

According to the avocado variety chart from SREC Jim is a fair tasting variety. It's a B type, thin skin and smaller fruit than Bacon. The only positive remarks are that it is a regular producer. Bacon is not a very good tasting avocado and I suspect nether is Jim. You still have time to return it get a Holiday or Pinkerton.

Thanks JF

Now i feel like digging it up from the ground and return the jim bacon. I want something that is buttery, creamy flavor taste avocado. I have pinkerton grafted, and i heard is not a good producer.

Now how would you rank these varieties JF if i can get them?

queen
holiday
reed
pinkerton

Thanks.

JIM   (Guat.) Regist. 1943 Originated at 6500 Springfield St., San Diego, CA, by John M. Reinecke. Fruit season, Apr.-Aug.; color, green; weight. 7 1/2 ozs.; quality, questionable; oil, 12.2% Seed, 2 ozs. (CAS Yearbook 1950) Two trees at South Coast Research Station Irvine, CA.,field 44, row 11, trees 7 & 8. Trees are hardy, upright but not as much so as Bacon or Zutano. Fruit usually ready in Jan. but this varies from year to year, 7-11 ozs, smooth, thin skin, olive green to maroon, shmoo shaped, long thin neck, light colored flesh, poor taste. Appears to be much more Mex. than Guat. or hybrid. (J.R. Frink 1998) (=Jim Bacon) Origin, CA; Race, MxG; Flowering group, B (Lahav & Gazit)

From an avocado database.  I grew Jim into a 20 ft tall tree.  Pretty fruit, poor taste here.  Maybe better grown elsewhere.  Took a chainsaw to it.

Wonder how it would do in Florida as compared to Cali (it has been known that some fruit produce better in each state, when comparing "apples to apples" and oranges to oranges", not literally but figuratively).  While I have not tasted it, I have been told by people in the cooler areas of Florida, Zone 9, that bacon produces well and taste/texture was vary good (I did not know the people personally but did hear it from two individuals so take it for a grain of salt).

Out of your list I would go with Reed and if you want year round avocado you add a Pinkerton and Hass.

Anyone ever try the fruit on one of these.  I grafted a tree and planted it but considering yanking it o top working it with something more exciting.  Its vigorous at least but I am thinking better to do something else with the spot its in.

If you’ve tasted bacon then you’re good to pass on jim bacon. Seedling if bacon, very vigorous, very precocious, and great as a pollinator but otherwise nothing to write home about flavor wise in my opinion but then again I don’t like bacon avos so much. My in laws liked it though.

The tree ended up dying in a pot but the rootstock that shot up has grown well

I laughed when I read below that quality of jim bacon was questionable with poor taste. Just how I remember it. But it does make a pretty dark green fruit. And it holds fruit very well. First year 5 gallon had some 30 fruit on it which in the long term stunted its growth but was still amazing to behold.
