Taste Test
« on: November 29, 2021, 01:19:45 AM »
A casual taste test with 4 people, in general order of preference. Fruit are my own or from Citrus Expo.

1) Sugar Belle, taste like smarties, zing!  sweet and sour.  Brix 12

2) Juanita, juicy, flavorful, orangey.  Brix 11

3) Ventura Lemondarin, sweet, sour, lemony. Brix16

4) Early Pride "better than cuties" very sweet, juicy, mild orange flavor. Brix 11

5) Sweet Frost, very sweet, good flavor. Brix 10.5

6) Owari, sweet, bag of juice, bland.  Brix 8.5

7) Changsha, a little juice, OK flavor Brix 12

8) Loch Laurel, Juicy, less flavor than Early Pride. Brix 8

9) Early St. Anne.  Bland. Brix 6

Poncius hybrids:

US119 seedless, yellow skin, sweet, very orange smell and taste, an earth taste giving way to the orange.  Hard to separate pulp from seed.  Brix 12

Bishop Citrandarin 851 F2  Bitter then milder, not Poncirus flavor Lemony scent.  Bright orange skin.  Taste popular enough that request was made for seed.  Brix 10

Pomelo x Poncirus F2 plant 1-2,  grapefruit taste, would go well in gin, sour, not Poncirus flavor Brix 8

From Expo, Unknown mislabeled Poncirus hybrid, scent of grapefruit, floral, 'Wow, OMG' 'Like Sour Patch Kids' musky pine 'Like you made a citrus beaver'  Brix 9

Picture is of unknown fruit collected from presentation table.  Ideas?

I found Bishop Citrandarin to be intensely flavored. It is surprisingly sweet, plus tart. Here are 2 photos of Bishop grafted on Poncirus. They'll be observed and compared for hardiness this Winter.

Apparently fruit will be sweeter as it continues to ripen for a few more weeks, last year the brix was 14 in December

interesting taste test :P.
It leads me to two questions:
1. Owari seems not to be as good as his assumed reputation. I have a satsuma collot which shall be a kind of owari.  Does anywhere cultivate satsuma collot and what are the experience concerning fruit quality and frost hardiness ?
2. Bishop citrandarin seems very promising , Does anywhere in Europe cultivate Bishop citrandarin and what are the experience concerning fruit quality and frost hardiness ?
Thanks Frank

It is doubtful that it is in Europe.  However if anyone grew a lot of US 852 from seed which should be available In Europe, there would be an excellent chance that a seedling would be of better quality than what I have, mine is just a chance seedling that I bought thinking it was US 852.

Seedlings of US 852 have been sold in Europe as HRS 899 a, b, c, etc.  They have varying degrees of hardiness, leaf shape, and taste.

To tedburn, it could be that owari Satsuma may need more summer heat to increase flavor?

Thanks Andrew, yes this is perhaps possible also with the late maturing. I have a Satsuma miagawa in pot , this variety works in my climate and I had delicious fruits last year begin of November
