Yes they will flower but they will also make leaves and push new stems.  Yes remove flowers on any tree that is too small too hold fruit. IE just grafted this year.

For me it gets too hot here in March and April so its better to graft now.  If you live somewhere cooler, you have more flexibility in when you choose to graft your avocados.

Thank you. I grafted a couple seedlings in mid November and now the buds are starting to come alive.  I read your posts on avo grafting s along with illustrated pictures.  They are very helpful.

i looked up oxnard on the map.  its very close to the ocean so you can graft probably anytime you want.  its best to use budwood from late winter though I think.  theres been studies done by old time ca avocado growers where the tried grafting all times of year and saving scions for 6 months and trying it vs the fresh stuff.  and the result was scion wood taken in january or february worked best even when used much later in the year and compared to fresh cut summer scion.

i looked at the thermometer today it was 84 here!

84...wow
It's like mid 60s here.
Thank you for looking my place up and the advice.  Will graft a couple more avos tomorrow since the scion buds I have are really plump and swollen.

Kahalu is a small kid in comparison with my Lolo avocado.

Yeah the lolo killed the kahalu I tried.

I was out in Morro Bay for lunch today and decided to stop by Morro Creek Ranch to buy some avocados. $1.50 for either Hass or Lamb Hass... haven't bothered to stop there in a while since Righetti or others in Arroyo Grande seems better (CalPoly's was even better).

I just thought of you Mark! Seems like they have the better stuff on site vs mail order!

COVID must be over now cause there were so many tourists at the warf! Friends said business is good again and hopefully the spending continues even though prices have to go up due to increasing costs, food and labor.

Saw some people buy a live dungeness crab for $35!!! ($20/LB). Even cooked rock crab claws were $15/lb.

Brad's got the right idea with his Amazon Avocado forest :)

...

I just wish there was a way to buy Cali avocados mail order.  Used to buy from Morro Creek Ranch Avocados many years ago but got a shipment of some really nasty fruit one year and quit.

Have a nice holiday season........

Have you tried the Brogdon? I’ve heard good things. I’m looking for any cold hardy varieties (I guess pretty much all Mexican?) that taste ok or better...

I understand commercial and even small farm applications, but I’m curious as to why backyard growers don’t cocktail more trees? Too unreliable? Uneven growth? I would like some zutano etc. blooms but I don’t want to sacrifice an entire tree’s space to have it, I’d rather just have a couple branches.

I’m on your page Brad, prefer to grow hardy seedlings out and top work later, the problem is that weather is too unpredictable here in gulf Texas. Everything I got from you last month I topworked then we hit 26 for 4 hrs. I wrapped them up, maybe one bacon and one zutano made it... the rest are toast. By late March-April it will be way too hot. I prefer November grafts, I guess I’m going to have to cold frame and Macguyver heat for better success

The weather here is crap too.  Its 90F and super dry windy one week then the next is cold and wet and frost.  Very difficult to do avocado grafting outside exposed to the elements here as well.  Stone fruit and annonas etc are much more forgiving.   Avocado grafts hate the dry air when they push through the tape or frost.  Real PITA.

I saw that pretty avocado picture on page two of your survey. Just out of curiosity do you know how big the adult tree is?

Seems that way!   Years ago all I got was black, rotting fruit with strings.

Yep, not bad, recommended by Pine Island Nursery.  Top worked it several times.  It's now holding a newly grafted GEM that is about to explode in blooms.

My Man Cave evolves, complete with a very juvenile sign that belongs in a freshman dorm room rather than a 72 year old's greenhouse.  ;D  Got it hanging on a Reed branch.

GEM, Feb. 22.  Buds just now opening.  My 10' Sharwil has been blooming for weeks.  Flies really like it. Bees not so much.

Brad, what do you know about maluma?  I've hooked up with a Aggie doctor in Weslaco who's an avocado specialist.  He raved about it.  He's working with Mary Lu regarding varieties suited for the RGV (Rio Grande Valley).  It was a shock to hear their low was only 21F during ice storm Uri.  Mine was 3F, 5 storms in all keeping us isolated and below freezing for many days.

Mark the sharwil looks awesome.  Love how strong they grow.

Maluma, I think its just a hass thats left on the tree to full maturation but could be wrong.  I think its just a brand name for extra ripe hass.  There was a post about maluma here and it was fairly vague what their marketing people were actually selling.  I think maybe its a scam, but i could be totally wrong.  Most people have never had a really ripe hass fruit.  Blows away the junk thry sell at the supermarkets.

Theres also a hawaii one called malama, slightly different spelling.  Its supposed to be good.   Grows pretty weak here.  Something funny with the rootstock compatibility of my tree.  The portion below the graft line is about 2X the diameter of the grafted part?

Ill go and snap some pics of my new area today.  Had to put bags on over 100 grafts here because of excessive heat and low humidity last week.  Major work to get trees grafted over.

Its big, the tree is around 50 years old.   The trunk was arou d 2-3ft wide and its taking up the entire backyard its planted in.

Nice, wish I could grow one here. That would take one heck of a greenhouse.

Thanks for the info Brad. I'll check with the specialist.  I may have gotten the spelling wrong. Whatever it is, he says it's a big hit in South Africa.  I searched and read a few threads on it here.  https://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/CFS-AVO-3C.pdf

Sorry about that heat. I have a friend in Utah who says the lakes have all but gone dry.  Apparently north of you  got some really good snow about a week ago.  We too are in a designated "severe drought".  No significant rain for months.  So much for the incredible state wide wildflower crop this year.  My area is thick with them usually, both sides of the roads for miles and miles.

There's also a couple of branches of Lamb on that Sharwil, thanks to you!

There are work arounds, choose "dwarf" trees and treat with a PGR like Bonzi.

you got the spelling right.  its called maluma.  but in the photos I saw it looked like regular hass.  they were touting their higher than average oil content from letting the fruit get extra ripe.

Mark, the one in the hawaii book is different than maluma.  I have one of those malama trees.

MALAMA   Malama is a new, high quality cultivar developed by the University of Hawaii> The fall ripening, pyriform purple fruits are thick fleshed and the flavor rich and nutty. Type B flower. (Frankie's Nursery, Waimanalo, Hawaii,1999)

I think your Sharwils are so good . They have name recognition as well and your maybe the only one in CA that has them to sell.

Your the first person I have heard say Gem is precocious bearing.

This is a picture of my , uh seriously 10 year old grafted Gem.
I have always thought the allure behind this variety was the perfect initials of its patentor.
What makes it the B grades?

It is Maluma, a sport of Hass with better attributes like longer hang time.  Popular in S. Africa.
