Import lychee trees from China?
« on: December 16, 2021, 02:01:20 PM »
All this Yangmei talk has me wondering about the possibility of doing a group order for Lychee trees.
I searched around for a little bit on google but I couldn't find much information.

Can any of the forum members who have experience importing trees from China give me a breakdown of the process involved?
I'm completely unaware of how to start.

I'm sure there are plenty of new varieties there for sale and I'd guess there is enough interest here to order a few hundred.

I remember reading that they have a 2 year post entry quarantine (I think it was CA). Not sure if it applies to every state? Wondering if I imported a whole bunch of those seedless ones to here.

Last time I checked earlier 2021, lychee trees are no longer allowed to be imported. You may want to call APHIS to check if there’s any update

Got it, I feared it was going to be something like that.
Lychee is considered a agriculture in Florida so I guess that makes sense.
I'll try to double check.
It would be nice to get some of the newer ones

Would it be better to import the Chinese varieties from Australia? It seems the aussies have them and decreased language/customs barrier?

I imported 50 about 5 years ago from China, they were inspected one year later by the local Ag dept. then almost after the 2nd year in quarantine California state Ag came out and said we weren't allowed to have imported lychee trees from China anymore and they then took all the trees. No reimbursement at all. I think there is still a ban from China from importing them.

You can thank the idiot who smuggled lychee erinose mite infested material illegally (no inspection) to Florida for that.
