Please ID Tropical AU Littoral fruit
« on: December 25, 2021, 06:37:24 PM »
Please let me know what the tree of this fruit is called or if you have experience with it.

Growing right where the forest meets the beach, under a coconut weeping out to the sun. Small tree, like 3m short.
To me it tastes like Araza but less sour. The skin (exocarp) is a bit bitter so I peal it off and it comes of very easy.
Mesocarp is very soft and fibrous and does not come of the seed easy, very juicy. One large spherical seed.
I like it a lot better then Araza, smaller fruit and yeild but flavour is better.
They taste better slightly overripe if you can find one cause the wildlife like them too.

Quite a few fruit this year that I haven't seen pervious years.

Yes very silimar but seams like this one does not have the top caps (calyx) like the b. crassifolia has.
Have a small nance tree so can compare leafs and see if they are related maybe.

Yeah it's hot and humid, gardening in a loincloth at the moment! Can see distant lightning over the mountain almost every night.
Thornton beach, the north parking in relation to the cafe, 5m from the sand under a coconut. Now when to look for I can try and spot on other beaches.

Had a look at young Brosimum alicastrum fruits and they have that jackfruit kinda pattern and this one is just mono-color. It would be so cool if it was the Maya nut. Btw the flowers of that species is so cool!

Here's an image of the tree or bush, it's weeping as it's pushing towards the sun on the beach.

On closer look it does look very similar to Nance in the Malphigiaceae.

Although it appears malphigs have the opposite leaves and this is alternate.

Hmm, looks like  Ximenia americana have some long thorns.
Will have a look and compare. Can cut the fruit to get a cross section image.

If it helps any, shelled seeds from Ximenia Americana have such a high oil content that they will burn like a torch. The folks at work were pretty surprised when I showed them.

That is impressing Galatians, I tried to do that with one fresh seed but it did not take fire, maybe they have to be dried.
The seed itself had no bitter taste and the pice I left out the mouse took so musn't be to bad, still not sure if I can try a whole seed.
Got a picture of the seed comming soon.

They have to be shelled and dried to burn like that. They won't do it fresh in my experience. It will take a few seconds before it catches fire, but when it does it will burn a surprisingly long time for its size.

BTW, the orange on my finger is tumeric, haha!

So that's the a cross section of the seed.
Will see if they burn once dry, would be good candle substitute :D

The shell looks much thicker in that photo than what I have seen on Ximenia Americana. I wonder if there is some variation.

I just had a look at the tree and it does not have thorns or protusions from the branches.
Still don't know what it is...hmm.
