Trying to ID Cuban Fruit From Description
« on: February 20, 2022, 02:32:43 PM »
Hello

My mother-in-law is from Cuba, and has spoke very fondly of a fruit that no one has yet to identify to her. She recalls fruit from childhood in Cuba, 1950's and 60's.

Description:

Fruit are roundish, around grapefruit size, and can be purple or green. She does not recall any latex. Fruit was mostly flesh, juicy. Not much info on seeds. She recalls the fruit as being very sweet and tasty.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

Sounds like it could be a jaboticaba or a jambolan but if it's truly cuban maybe it could be a wild eugenia?

Thanks for all the replies.

She says it is not caimito (star apple), and is not annona. Definitely not jabo, as fruit is grapefruit sized.

I thought a. reticulata too. And yes, these were beloved childhood fruits. But that's not it. She has a San Pablo tree in backyard, and has eaten all kinds of annonas. It is something else. Caimito made most sense to me, but she says there was no latex.

Yes, I have a jaco beach caimito with green fruits this size. I have seen a purple fruiting tree with large fruit as well. A properly ripened fruit can taste like a tres leches desert. I will be removing the tree since I do not really like the fruit. Most years, the fruit is not ready until mango season so it gets ignored.

i mean grapefruit size is big..not many fruits that i can remember are this big and purple.

but let's try:
purple passion fruit, caimito, plum, prune, davidson's plum,  purple dragon fruit, mangosteen, purple custard apple, if you count eggplant or tomato, purple figs not big enough. can't think of anymore. A syzygium(more close to pink than purple but maybe)

internet and unlikely: carissa carandas, purple tomatillo, akebi(japanese and not round),Dacryodes(not round),Palmyria (nungu)

well if i had to bet my life it's either caimito, mangosteen or a plum. what else can be this big and purple?
