Summer in Sydney - where to find tropical fruit?
« on: August 25, 2022, 03:09:37 PM »
Any advice on where to shop and what to expect?

Especially interested in finding: different lychees including Erdon Lee, the best passion fruit, amber jackfruit, mammoth atemoyas, achachairu and small leaf mangosteen.

Mahalo!

Is that Sydney Australia ??
If so your best bet is probably the wholesale fruit and veg markets, other markets. Dedicated Fruit Shops, if they still exist.
S E Asian / Vietnamese groceries and supermarkets are usually good for fruit from those cultures, but stories can vary a lot.
Organic / Health shops often have some unusual fruit.
Again, for Sydney Australia, check out local blogs and FB pages, might help you narrow it down.

Yes, Australia. Those are all good suggestions.

Appears to be lots of Asian groceries, fruit sellers and markets in Sydney. Maybe someone has a favorite? Is Paddy’s Market worth a look?

A previous thread mentioned Cabramatta markets but that’s a ways outside of downtown where I’ll be staying.

Absolutely. Logan, lychee, mangoes, dragon fruit, atemoyas, achachairu and mangosteen can all be found there. Don't expect sellers to know varieties though (except for mangoes). I'd also recommend Boon Cafe (more expensive though).

I think Cabramatta is home to a large Vietnamese community, so could be a good place to visit.
Maybe Chinatown and Haymarket could be as good but more central Sydney ?
You could try to find out which market wholesalers handle tropical fruit, I know there are some, but haven't been to Sydney for many years.

You do know it's winter in Sydney right now, don't you?
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

Nice, thank you for the info. Boon Cafe looks like great produce and a delicious menu, appreciate the rec!

Good idea, contacting wholesalers could prove fruitful if Chinatown and Haymarket vendors don’t have what I’m looking for.

Tropical Fruit World might be worth a trip ?
It is in NSW but Nth closer to Brisbane, they are growing subtropical fruit trees there.
I went there years ago, not sure what it is like now.
Certainly had a lot of fruit on display then.
You could also ask the same question on Australian tropical fruit Facebook pages ?

I’ve returned home and can report that I found very little.

Was there for nine days and checked several Coles and Woolworth’s, Boon Cafe, Harris Farms Market and Paddy’s Haymarket. Best selection was Paddy’s, went there twice, Saturday was best.

Educated guess I was too late for atemoyas and too early for achachairu and mangosteen. Found some middling passionfruit, including ones sold as panama red, and lots of great fresh lychees including Erdon Lee. Vendors mostly stocked with mangoes and stone fruits.

It's actually summer now. Summer solstice was in December.

And winter solstice will be in June.

In Sydney the temperatures drop lowest in July on average.

"Winter (June - August) Sydney's winter months are June to August when average temperatures drop between 8.8 - 17°C (47.8 - 62.6°F)."
