HEIGHT OF ROLLINIAS
« on: April 08, 2013, 04:20:54 PM »
Saw a u-tube of folks picking rollinias but had to use a latter, pole & means to catch fruit. Have several 2 year old trees that are really taking off .So I was wondering if it would be ok to top the trees so as to limit the harvest height? Hopefully that would produce a more squat tree? or would the the production be lower once trees had matured?

thanks
rich

Hi
You can prune biriba trees.  They are fast growers here, almost like something that got over fertilized.  Whether the over all production could be lower is a good question.  I would get ready to plant another one.  They can burn out comparatively fast.  They are good for about 10-15 years here I think.

Like most anona, you can prune in winter after it has fruited and goes 'dormant'. In some places it wont go deciduous, but you'll be able to tell when it slows down.

Yes you can top the rollinia. If you don't they get too tall for picking, but that takes quite a few years.

At Raul's place ( sealevel ) they are about 10 meters now , mine stay a lot smaller .

I've seen rollinias here at over 40 feet tall. In good soil they can get monstrously tall.

I top mine every year, so that I can use clippers while standing on an eight-foot ladder, to harvest fruits.

My Rollinia would have easily topped 30 feet if I had not kept it trimmed annually. They grow like weeds here also....
