Air layering sphagnum moss vs sphagnum peat moss and perlite
« on: December 08, 2013, 07:51:57 PM »
Been doing research on air layering and I've been seeing different methods.

To you air layer gurus

Is sphagnum moss necessary for air layering or can one use sphagnum peat moss and perlite?

When is the best time of  year to air layer?

You can just use peat moss or sphagnum moss. Both work fine, no need for perlite.

Your alive!!!

Do I just water it once when prepping or do I have check to see if it's dried out and water as needed?

Water the ball of moss, squeeze out the water, and wrap it good and tight in plastic, like one of the grocery plastic (single use) haha bags that kill dolphins and then wrap in foil with the unshiny side outside.

As a newbie at air layering, I think Sphagnum moss is easier to handle, and it stays moist longer than peat. But I had a problem with it retaining too much water after transplant. I didn't know about the bark mix at the time, so I potted the airlayer in potting soil and over watered it. Needless to say it died.
