Gas powered pole saw
« on: December 26, 2013, 05:18:06 PM »
Does any one use one of these? Would like to know what features to look for & how long can it be & still be manageable. I need to control a wind break/ hedge  to about 14 feet. Any great saws at a good price? Any should be avoided ?

thank for your help

Yes avoid the cheap brand sold in Home Depot Homelite. Really bad to start once its warm. If you can afford it buy a Stihl brand and will last a lifetime. I now have a light chain saw 14" and a pole saw. Love them both.

u sure a pole saw is a good choice for a hedge? The only time you'd need a saw would be if you let it get overgrown.

I'd think that the best tool for the job would be an articulating, shafted hedge trimmer like the Shindaiwa AH242. I have the AHS242 (a bit shorter), and it's been great for my hedge that I keep around 8 foot tall. With the AH242 and a small ladder, you should be able to knock it out.

I don't have one, but am seriously considering buying one of these chainsaw attachments for a brush cutter:

I highly recommend a Stihl gas powered pole saw.  Have used them for years and they do a great job and are a good compliment to your traditional chainsaw.  They hold up and are worth the price.

Yep, can't beat Stihl.  I have Christmas trees and shear a couple of times a year.  I have an electric pole chain saw, believe it goes to 8' extension.  I have not unboxed it yet.  I'd go electric over gas any day.

One of the first tree butchers I had was a gas powered hedge trimmer, long trimmer too.  Try swinging one of those 16 lb. behemoths in a 70 degree swing while you take baby steps around the tree....3,000 times a day.  SOLD.

I now use a Beneke, electric powered, about a 6' wand, rotary blade.  I stuff the rechargeable lithium batteries in a fanny pack, strap it on and get after it.

You can buy a 30" long reach handle to add to it.  http://www.treeteck.com/content/beneke-pruner-wands-accessories

U might try rent one from a rental shop...unless u got acres...once a year rental will work.   Also usually they've got the good type.
Even a good non electric extension pole saw works unreal for..prune and, harvesting.
