....I'd love to see more people growing this....

If your friend will share seeds, I will gladly buy them from you!  :)

My Rollinia laurifolia and Rollinia aurantiaca first seeds just germinated. Will see, its leaves should be pretty...

from my friend told me the fruits are decent sized....although I haven't been able to find any info about the actual fruit size online.

I'm guessing they're as large as a sugar apple, but they could be much larger or smaller.

well, it turns out that the book my friend has, with info about this species, says that the fruit only gets to be about 3cm wide x 5cm long

so I'm guessing they are about the size of a large egg at best....

hopefully they are tasty and not loaded with seed.

I will be sure to take some pics of the fruit on my friends tree if and when they finally do ripen (

regardless, I'm happy to have this rare species...the foliage is amazingly soft and velvety...and the tree is beautiful.

the fruits don't get too large...but I'm hoping they are tasty regardless (without too many seeds either!).

and also hoping that my friends hand pollination with R. deliciosa will create a new hybrd!

i've still been grafting few of these....just for the annona obsessed collectors out there.   ;)

good news!!

I got word from my friend with a fruiting tree, he has just now tasted this fruit for the first time...

being a seasoned and discerning fruit collector, he said the taste was "very good, hard to describe".

I'm excited to possibly taste this fruit soon...and to post a review!

Wow, great news!
I should hope for a 'decent sized' review on this species  ;) ;)

Keep us posted!

BTW, this one was renamed as Annona schunkei by Rainier (and a few others) during the Great Merging.

So, it is unlikely that it would be able to hybridize with Rollinia deliciousa, a true Rollinia. Not that it isn't worth the shot, of course.
Sorry for the multiple posts!

thanks for the info...

i've heard this before, but still refuse to call them annona.

the R. schunkei has flowers that look much like R. deliciosa...and I do think they can possibly hybridize.

got to taste one of these fruits the other day...let me tell you what I think honestly,

the fruit was a bit small, even small for this tree, which seems to produce fruits about 1/3rd larger...

the fruit came from a potted specimen...so generally I'm assuming the size is closer to what's pictured still on the tree, about the size of a chicken egg.

the fruit I tasted had been refrigerated for a few days, about 3 im guessing..and I assume it was a bit past its prime.

but the flavor was slightly sweet, and decent...the most curious feature of this fruit is the texture of the pulp...it's more like lychee than anything else i can think of.  Firm, almost crisp, and a bit difficult to clean from the seeds.

It is the best rollinia species I've tasted so far other than R. deliciosa (that's not saying much..the only other rollinia i've tasted is R. slyvatica)...but I still have yet to taste a larger fruit from the tree, and one that is at peak ripeness...so far I would only recommend this one to collectors...but maybe the taste is better than what i've had?  The owner of the tree has tasted more of these fruits than me, and seemed to enjoy them.

I will let u know if I get to taste any more of these, and if the flavor improves.

The fruit looks akin to A. rugulosa... I can't comment on the leaves. How was it acidity wise?

I hope you are able to try more, sounds like an interesting fruit nonetheless. Perhaps you wouldn't mind sharing seeds if you get enough (Of course our master breeder Coconut should get a chance before me  ;))

no real acidity to speak of...really hoping to taste another at peak ripeness right from tree..and a larger fruit.

have very few seeds...will probably try to sell a small batch...but not sure yet!

here is the grafted schunkei now...flowering in the greenhouse.

not sure, but I think I grafted this just last year?

the flowers smell very strong, like wet paint for sure, almost gives you a head rush to sniff them!

hopefully it doesn't kill brain cells to repeatedly whiff the flowers...because I really liked the smell

If I can get some fruits to set I'll be sure to post.  Maybe I can taste some of these perfectly ripened.  I've heard they are a small, but good fruit. Unfortunately, the only one I tasted seemed to be bland, and immature.
