Opuntia 'Santa Ynez' pads for postage
« on: December 06, 2014, 08:07:59 PM »
I got about 10 pads of the 'Santa Ynez' Opuntia available for postage.

They came from a generous CRFG member in the Pasadena area and he cut lots of pads for distribution at the meeting. He never got any fruit from it and thinks he has too much nitrogen in the soil.

Anyway, the long narrow pads are typical for this cultivar. So the plant will be upright rather than spreading. The width doesn't exceed 6 inches but the longest pad is over 1.5 foot.
There are very few glochids on it.
Rivenrock cactus used to sell them and they still have them for $15 a pad if you contact them. https://web.archive.org/web/20110101133102/http://www.rivenrock.com/santaynez.htm

Here's a photo of most of them.

If you're in socal and willing to wait, I can bring them to the OC scion exchange in January. That's where they'll go if there are leftovers.

I am interested in two (or one) of the longer pads.

I could pick-up at one of the up coming CRFG scion exchanges.

Okay I'll save a couple for you, Richard.

I'll try to be at the LA, WLA, and Foothill scion exchanges as well since they're all about the same distance from where I live.

Fang, can you save me 2 pads?  I can meet up with you anytime in the weekend or the OC exchange. I've been wanting to try growing some optunias.

Thanks for the interest. I've run out of extra pads from the people that already posted here or contacted me.

Berto, I haven't received PM or email from you yet.

Luisport, the pulp is orange red according to the website. I don't have a mature plant of it.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant I have enough pads for everyone in here so far, but no more after that.

I'm still trying to figure out the cheapest way to mail them since they survive very well. Most of the pads are too long to fit inside a medium priority mail box. I'm thinking I can make my own long boxes and use standard post which should be less than $10.

You can chop off some length from the bottom of the pads or top (then cure for a couple days), however its not as aesthetically pleasing. Other then you could send (1) pad in a large padded envelope wrapped in newspaper (then price it out to send USPS).
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Thanks. Would customs care if I shipped it internationally, like to Europe?

The customs in the UAE, usually don't care when it comes to seeds and plants.  ;D

If you still have any I would like to get a pod.

Hi all, sorry for tagging to this post. But I am desperate to get one pad with red fleshed fruits. Any variety will do.
Thanks!

Cheers,

My advice is to contact MattsLandscape.com through his Epicacti Nursery web page:  http://www.epicacti.com .  Matt has plenty of Burbank spineless Opuntia and ships international.

Sorry, fruit is not "red".

I think Matt needs to be coaxed into taking notes on the fruit of his non-DF varieties.   I have tried to contact him about which varieties fruit, and which ones of those are tasty.  With all the epis he has on his site, it'd be nice to know about the fruit they make...and could lead to more sales from the fringe fruit-nut crowd.

On another note, my santa ynez has put some new growth the past few weeks.  Thanks again!

I thought the red fleshed fruits are milder tasting than white ones. That's like the opposite from dragonfruit.

This is opuntia linguiformis, or cow's tongue opuntia. The fruit are red fleshed and are usually pretty good.

Burbanks only ever developed one opuntia for fruit production, all the others were intended as cattle fodder. There are much better fruiting opuntia out there than burbank's spineless types. I do have the one he developed as a fruit crop, it's probably the rarest thing I own, and it is not spineless. It has long spines, but no glochids. It is some kind of Robusta hybrid. The reds have been better than any other colour I've tried, including yellow, and the flavour is different. Reds have a raspberry-like flavour, whereas the yellows/ oranges are kind of melony.

Torrance PCH#1, is a red and has a watermelon like flavor to it. I have tasted some wild Opuntia sp. that have a raspberry flavor. Also Opuntia joconostle has a raspberry sour flavor to it.
