Pink guava
« on: September 15, 2016, 08:03:51 PM »
Got some guava fruits from Walmart. The sticker says Pink Guava. Later I found out it's light pink which is new for me and I did like the taste. It tastes almost like the Thai white apple guava, firm and a lot of seeds. I am going to plant some seeds and hope I get the same fruit one day.  :) I have a 7 feet tall Pink guava tree and the fruits are good but a little different soft inside and dark pink. Does anybody else has this light pink variety?

I have been growing this variety for many years now. This variety is more superior in terms of taste and taste than with the dark pink fleshed ones which to me is more suitable for juicing It is much more crunchier and sweeter, as comparable to a good thai white guava. I usually will scoop out the deep pink fleshed core together with the seeds and do a blend with some other fruits. The seeds usually dun bother me much, though I do filter them out if for the kids.

Cheers,
Jet

dxgn Nice to hear that somebody is growing this tree. Yes, I found it tastier than Thai white too. How big the tree gets? Is it bushy or upright growing?

i have 4 fruiting types so far.
i have a large pink, no pics for it now.

i kind of like this small pink though.
the plant is in a 7gal container, and isnt but 3ft tall
its getting 8 to 10 fruits at a time for a "main crop"
and has a couple here and there through the year.
its still pretty young, so, that may change.

i had thought this was a root-cutting from the Mexican cream (yellow-ish)
but, i might have mixed it up with one i grew from seed.

I really like this large white fruit.
The first year, i hated eating guava because of the seeds
now i just chew the  seeds. not sure why i didnt do that before
i guess i thought they were too hard, but im pretty pleased with chewing them
and really like this white fruit.

the pink is OK, just not quite as sweet.
my large pink is about the same.

small pink - 3ft - 7gal

greenman62 I have the white one like on your picture with the tag name Mexican Guava. I like them too more than Thai White. Your pink looks like my "dark" pink but the fruit was bigger. This one on my picture is pale pink. I think because I took the picture at night under the light it messed up the color and looks orangeish. I will take some pics tomorrow under the day light and we will see the difference.

greenman62 What it the yellow fleshed one?

The yellow one is from a tree a friend brought back from South Texas
supposedly it came from Mexico.
it had no name, i think it might be a seedling from Mexican cream
or, at least related to it in some fashion.

I am guessing a lot of people in Mexico have guava
and raise them from seed, and have done that for generations
so, i just say its "Guava from Mexico" :)

its funny that we are talking guavas. I got some guava plants that came from seed and some that grew from roots of nearby guava tree. the one from seed fruited in 15 months and the ones from roots are already producing very sweet guavas. these are white fleshed guavas. What is most interesting is that ones from roots and seeds are producing guavas with aborted seedless guavas and sweetness on brix clocked at 21. which I would consider very sweet. Along with sweetness, they also have mild tartness.

if anyone wants cuttings of the ones producing seedless/aborted seed guavas, let me know, PM me.

greenman62 Here is a picture I made outside. You can see the real color. And another pink guava from my new tree that was supposed to be Mexican Cream. I have another one that didn't fruit yet. There is still hope.  :)

I would love some cuttings !
21 brix is huge for a guava. i dont think ive tasted anything close to that.

interesting colors.

By the way, my white was making all roundish fruit
every one was perfectly round, and they all ripened within 3 weeks or so.

Now, it started producing again
and it has  bell-shaped guava, like the one in the last photo.
and ALL of them are like that. no round ones at all.

its really peculiar. i wonder if it is temperature related, or soil, or ??
