No, the fake one hasn't fruited yet either.  I'll post some pictures when they do

That looks more like the "fake" one to me, but I can't be certain.

Not yet.  It flowered this spring for the first time but didn't set fruit.  Maybe next year

On the left is true patrissi, or it should be, as the seeds came directly from Columbo on our forum, from French Guyana.
On the right is "aff patrissi" or "red", I forget where I got these.

I have the real one and the fake one.  I can post pictures tomorrow to compare.  They do look different

No fruit set on either tree, unfortunately, but they are growing happily and I hope for another chance in the upcoming spring.  A number of my other uncommon eugenias put out flowers but no fruit set this spring/summer also, I figure I'll update when they actually set fruit instead of celebrating flowers.

I just up-potted this one

I haven't been able to find pumice in bulk locally but I use Turface in its place for similar effect.

Have you tried eBay?

I'm looking for like 10 cubic feet of pumice, not economical to have delivered in small bags :)

Altexy is yours in part shade or full sun?  It looks much sparser than mine (unless you just pruned it).  Guavas seem very receptive to pruning.  I would normally say just hack it way down but if it is reaching tall for light it might need that light badly :)

Shpaz that mix sounds good and should last a long time.

I will post a picture as soon as I get a chance.  I got 30-40 good sizes guavas so far this summer and it has more flowers all the time.  Mine is air-layered, btw, not a seedling.

I do have to water it daily, and the sun here isn't nearly as intense as Arizona.

I have a regular psidium guajava in a 20gal container that produces all the fruit I can eat at 3ft height & width.  I don't think you necessarily need a dwarf type if you prune it often.

I have recurring spider mite infestations in my greenhouse and I don't think I have ever seen them attack my pitangatuba or any other eugenias.  I think you are about as safe as you can hope to be.

Spider mites seem to be worst on annonas for me, followed by citrus.

P. viridis
P. campechiana
P. sapota
P. caimito
P. hypoglauca

I don't remember all the botanical names offhand so for the benefit of others also:

P. viridis = green sapote
P. campechiana = canistel/eggfruit/yellow sapote
P. sapota = mamey
P. caimito = abiu
P. hypoglauca = cinnamon apple

I often forget which Sapotaceae are Pouterias and which are in other genus, but other nice Sapotaceae are sapodilla and olosapo.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is there a fast fruiting Inga variety?

You can find airlayered ones, they should fruit much faster.  I just replaced my big seedling tree with an airlayer of itself once it started fruiting.

I have some kind of pink guava (true guava - psidium guajava), I am not sure what type as it was mislabelled, but it looks similar to the common Ruby Supreme type.  Mine is a clone so I am not sure how true they are from seed nor how long it takes to fruit from seed.

It is soft when ripe, juicy and sweet.  I recommend it.  I don't like crunch guavas, either.   You might also like cattley guavas, both red and yellow types are nice.  Cattley guavas are commonly grown from seed and fruit quickly.

Larafarms in homestead/miami sells boxes of them.  I ordered one last season, they taste nice but all you can do is suck the juice off the flesh there isn't really anything to eat.

I have a grafted one growing in a small container, also.  Was really struggling for over a year since I got it but finally seems to be getting its stride.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Interest in Jackfruit on TFF
« on: August 12, 2024, 02:08:10 PM »
I'm currently growing 4 seedlings - all in containers in a greenhouse but this is my first go of it with Jackfruit. I'm looking at possibly using the seedlings for root stock down the line but for now just practice/interest in growing the plant itself. It'd be great to track down a couple interesting varieties to grow, I've only tasted store-bought which reminded me of some type of chewing gum that I can't quite place.

JuicyFruit gum is supposedly jackfruit flavored, I bet that is it

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for where to get mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) plants or seeds in the US?

You can find seedlings on Etsy and maybe Ebay.  I got mine from Etsy seller 9waters, though it seems he doesn't have any at the moment he usually carries them. Check regularly.  https://www.etsy.com/shop/9waters

I bought six or seven over the years.  Majority died, I still have one in ground in my greenhouse and one in a container.  For their first four years they put out maybe four leaves per year :-/

Garcinia Hombroniana / Seashore Mangosteen.  I have six or so healthy trees that are at least 5ft tall each, hoping for flowers soon.  I've never tried the fruit, just missed the season when I visited the Fruit and Spice Park.

Also my fern leaf guava.  Not sure when it will set flowers but it is 3ft tall and very healthy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Safe to paint hardwood branches?
« on: August 05, 2024, 02:04:50 PM »
The reason for wanting to paint the entire branch is because some of these grafts are far from the trunk, out of necessity, and I am worried I will accidentally prune off the whole branch.  I have the graft unions marked with a tag.

Thank you.  I assume other colors than white are okay also?  :)

« on: August 04, 2024, 09:21:37 AM »
When I graft new varieties onto established trees I am always worried that I will accidentally prune off the branch that the graft is on.  I have been tying a bunch of flagging tape along the length of the branch but it would be nicer to be able to just paint the whole branch with latex paint.  Is this generally safe?  I have a few citrus trees that I accidentally painted with thick white paint while painting pots and the paint remains years later and the tree seems unaffected.

First lemon drop was exciting for me, Thefatcuban, as the first garcinia I have grown to fruit.  My first two fruits were runts but the next few were bigger.  They are nice tasting and the plant is easy to care for.  I am looking forward to my achachairu and hombronianas (seashore) flowering soon as they look large enough.

I cut it open two days after picking it, probably should have waited longer.   :-\

« on: July 27, 2024, 04:29:37 PM »
I picked it a couple days ago and let it sit on the counter until it softened up further.  When I cut it open I found it was very unevenly ripe.  Some parts were soft with good taste and other parts were hard and not edible.  Hopefully better fruits in the next crop, but I am happy to see it fruiting nonetheless.
