Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seed starting mix
« on: May 15, 2025, 05:09:58 PM »
What do you do once you have seedlings sprout?? Do you leave them in that mix till they develop the true leaves?

Yes, as soon as they have a couple true leaves I move them to my normal soil.  The only issue I've seen was a batch of capsicum pepper seeds stalled after sprouting and never got their true leaves, then eventually all yellowed and died.  I wonder if this could be an issue with any tiny seeds because the coir has no nutrients.  The tropical seeds have been fine in it.  Could be a bad batch of pepper seeds too, they are ones I had in dried fruits from prior year.

Very nice!

I was just out pruning my in-ground in-greenhouse trees and my kwai muk has similar flushes at the end of every branch.  I actually tipped a lot of them because I want it to crate more forks.

Also, I notice that kwai muk makes really densely spaced lateral branches.  I've been cutting off every other one to let more light in, as the top would otherwise shade out the lower branches.  Like this:

I recently got a big brick of coconut coir on amazon for seed startgin and I am really happy with it.  I used to use pure peat moss or oven-sterilized soil and had issues with those

I'm in same area as you, I have a bunch of citrus trees but only a few that have enough excess growth to take cuttings.  If you are looking for a particular cultivar you can check UCR budwood program (not cheap) or MadisonCitrusNursery often sells scion in addition to their grafted plants

Is this first fruiting?  That looks like a big tree!  How long did you have to wait?

I you want to try Geffner I'll send you some scion any time.  I like mine a lot, but I've never tried another atemoya so nothing to compare to.

I have absolutely no idea, sorry.  It could be the graft, it could be disease, bad luck, who knows.  But when a limb gets wilty like that, and it isn't a lack of watering (which clearly it isn't as the other half is happy), I've never seen one come back from it.  I hope I'm wrong and yours does.

Yeah I think the Pink Mammoth side is on its way out :(

Nice!  How similar would you say it is to pitangatuba?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Paw Paw (Asimina triloba) Help
« on: May 12, 2025, 09:01:13 PM »
Wow that looks pretty serious, but if it is otherwise healthy I see no reason why I couldn't survive that.

I'm happy to see pawpaw will grow that far north.  I lived in Ann Arbor for a few years and it felt like winter dragged on forever, though I guess the extreme temps weren't much different than Pennsylvania.

I'd take you up on scion but I just planted my seedlings and I'd rather not mess with them until they have proven they want to survive.  The previous bareroot small seedlings I got have almost all died off.  This time I got 2gal trees from a nursery.

you know what, that might just be sunburn from coming out of the greenhouse. Only the top is purple, the other side is bright green.   And there's another bright green fruit the same size so I should find out soon enough!

13
I'm hoping my first fruit is just a weird runt, because it looks... quite different than expected.  Usually runts from orange colored fruits turn yellow then orange, but this one seems to be turning purple/black.  It has a ton of flowers still, and I have another one the same size, so I expect I'll get more fruit soon enough to see if any turn out right.

seller photos (multiple sellers have this, all using same photos)

Do you all go through the same thing where they seem to shed last years leaves pop after a good rain?  It's been dry here until over the weekend... expecting it to look like a completely different tree over the next couple of weeks.

My kwai muk doesn't seem to shed leaves overall, but dieback of entire branches is common.  It seems so healthy otherwise, though, I guess I will just tolerate it.

... Only seeing male flowers so far. Saw another much larger and established tree the other day. It was flowering too. Gotta feeling will finally be sampling kwai muk in the near future.

Mine flowered for the first time this year, and has already set some fruits!  So it isn't guaranteed to be all male flowers, you might get lucky like I did.

Thanks! What kind do you have?  Do you like it?

I was looking online and I found cuttings of a type called 'Octoberfest'  https://www.etsy.com/listing/1779870690/two-cuttings-of-the-tastiest-strawberry

I had never heard of arbutus unedo, but if it is zone7 I can try growing it outdoors.  I'm zone6b last I checked, but I think USDA upgraded my zone recently due to global warming :P

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Syzygium Symphony

Im not a huge fan of this genus, but I was impressed with the Giant Lau Lau at F&SP.   The fruit was tasty and the flower droppings under the tree was an impressive site.

I really liked this one too!  I was one of the few fruits that was available when I was there a few years back, and I like the "rose marshallow" flavor & texture.  It is the reason I bought a rose apple (couldn't find a giant lau lau).  This is actually the only syzygium I've tasted, now that I think about it.

I also have syzygium cumini (jamun) and syzygium malaccense (malay apple) seedlings of good size, both hopefully will start flowing soon.  The jamun grows like a giant weed, which matches its reputation.  The malay apple is more compact and bushy, and fussier.  It often gets leaf burn similar to jaboticabas, and branch dieback isn't uncommon.  I'm going to try watering it with rainwater instead once I get to collecting it.

Sounds like a great variety, is it sold anywhere?

poncirsguy, your trees are so nice and dark green, its reminding me it is time to fertilize

I am really excited that so many people have high regards for pawpaw.  I had difficulty with seedlings dying, but these reviews give me motivation to keep trying.  I have a wooded creek on my property, too, so I can try planting one down there and see if their reputation for growing next to water holds true.  I planted my best ones in full sun on a well-drained slope.  I'm going to give them a partial shade canopy for a few years... if they survive that long

I had noticed that red mombin seeds have gotten very cheap. Now I know why.

Darn, I got a airlayered red mombin and it is fruiting for the first time now.  I had heard it was good.

I thought these were difficult to grow from seeds?  Maybe I'm thinking of another mombin type.

My non-anomaly already makes more fruit than I can eat :)

Custard apple (annona reticulata) doesn't make anyone's list?  I've never had one, just curious.

-Right now my favorite annona is farmers-market soursop.  I hated it at first, but now I find it excellent.  My tree only made one so far and it wasn't properly ripe.
-I've only had grocery store cherimoyas, they were decent
-My own Geffner atemoya I really like, more than the grocery store cherimoyas
-I've only had a couple sugar apples and they were scrawny little ones, but still decent.
-Never tried pawpaw, but I just planted a few in my yard - I am at the top of their native range.
-I got one rollinia from my tree, tastes good but I hate the texture.  I'll try jaboticaba45s suggestion to pick it half-green next time.
-Never had illama.  I have tried growing a few but they always die within a year or two with blistered leaves.

As that branch grows more, just compare the leaves of it to the top branches of your tree and determine if they are identical.

I agree, this is what I would do.  It is rare that rootstock and scion growth looks identical.
