Kellys Choice Opuntia?
« on: May 24, 2015, 01:08:01 PM »
So I want to get a few Opuntia's for my front yard in a nice sunny spot for decorative and fruiting purposes.  My local nursery has a few varieties but when asking their "succulent guy" about them he was pretty useless about which one would produce the largests/tastiest fruit.

The one variety I am extremely insterested in they have is Kelly's Choice.  It seems to produce lots of gorgeous pink flowers.  But I cannot find much information anywhere about its fruiting habits and I don't want to drop $80 on two plants to find out next year they produce really tiny fruit.

They also had some Santa Rita's which looked quite nifty with their purple tint but my understanding is their fruit is tiny.

The "succulent guy" recommended I get either the wavy spineless or plain spineless for fruit but couldn't really tell me anything on them besides that they produce fruit.

Before asking they did not have Robusta of Ficus Indica there otherwise I would have grabbed some of those.

List of what they have on hand:
Wavy Spineless
Spineless
Santa Rita
Kellys Choice
And an Unanmed Native Spiny specimen.

Would love to know if any of these are worth growing for their fruit or if I would be better off with
something else entirely.

Thanks.

Better off with one of the a PARL selections or one of the selections I have made such as Torrance PCH#1 or Jeronimo MV.

I assume these aren't readily available commercially anywhere?

Unfortunately since I am just starting out I really don't have anything interesting to trade  :-\
