Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help harvesting pawpaws!
« on: June 19, 2022, 04:06:25 PM »
There are a bunch of asimina parvifloras that I have been keeping an eye on. They are a smaller fruited pawpaw species. But I have no experience judging by skin color on when to harvest..? The fruit are just turning from green to very slightly off-green. Can I harvest in this stage and ripen the fruit? Will thy even ripen like this after being off the tree? I want to get them before the wild creatures do!

Also if anyone has experience with asimina incana as well. Thanks!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Variegated sparkleberry

First one I've seen variegated. They are kind of like gritty blueberries. They runner out so there is a 'clonal' grouping of these.

Cold Hardy Citrus / New sweet orange?
« on: May 17, 2022, 06:28:24 PM »
What is this variety? They are labeled "sweet orange".
They either have sour orange in them, by the thorns.. or maybe have trifoliate, since I did see a single bi-leaf on one of the trees.
Either way they must be a rootstock hybrid? None are grafted or labeled as grafted.. the black mark on the trunk was just where tape was (not a graft).
I hope they are not just a sour orange variety mislabeled!

Looking for a few pounds of queen palm (syagrus) seeds. They are producing now in Florida, and very common in south/central Fl. Preferably in the yellow fruit stage (not green or orange). If you live in Florida and don't know what one is look it up and I'm sure you can find seeds easy! syagrus romanzoffiana
Thanks

The title says it. I am looking to buy a bulk order of fresh palm seeds that will have a good germination rate. I don't mind if there's still pulp on the seeds but if it makes it cheaper to ship cleaned than that is alright.. I just want the best success rate possible.

Looking for 100-1,000 seeds of:
1. Silver Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana var. litoralis)
2. Chilean Wine Palm (Jubaea chilensis)
3. Syagrus x Jubaea
4. Syagrus x Butia
5. Butia x Jubaea
6. Parajubaea hybrids.... 'Parajubaea x (butia or syagrus or phoenix or ceroxylon, etc)'
6. Quindio Wax Palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense)
7. Parajubaea (torallyi, cocoides, sunkha etc)

I will even throw these out there if anybody has a good bulk price, again for seeds:
8. Regular queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana)
9. Senegal date palm
10. Canary Island date palm
11. other hardy syagrus species
12. other hardy phoenix species
13. other relevant hybrids  <---- parent sexes do not matter ie 'butia x jubaea' vs 'jubaea x butia'  doesn't really matter
14. any other rare cold tolerant palms (to about -6C)  <--- no palmettos or cabbage

Also willing to trade. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Regrown variegated seedlings
« on: January 08, 2022, 05:56:47 PM »
I have a seedling Hass that came up quite variegated, put out a set of variegated leaves, then died back to a stump, then came back with a couple sets of normal leaves EXCEPT the veins are white and this is the only indication it's even variegated. I don't get it. It's not grafted so why is it doing this?
I believe I read this happened to another plant somewhere as well

Cold Hardy Citrus / Minneola x Meyer lemon
« on: December 21, 2021, 12:07:01 PM »
I came across this hybrid in a market labeled as 'orange lemon'. The rind smell, color and top bell shape seem like minneola (hard to see the bell) and the bottom point and size and fruit taste is definitely Meyer lemon. This is a hardy hybrid. I haven't seen the tree but it is local and it has gotten frosty in the teens in recent years.. the crop was a decent amount. Basically a Meyer lemon with orange color rind. I don't like Meyers that much but am curious what these F3 seeds will produce, hopefully pollinated by something other than a lemon!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planting mangos near coast in Florida
« on: June 17, 2021, 07:46:07 PM »
I will be planting a single mango sapling in a corner nook of a house basically right on the Gulf of Mexico. I can choose from Mallika, Ice cream, Carrie, Young (all grafted and presumably on turpentine rootstock) or ataulfo from seed (polyembryonic) or Kent from seed (monoembryonic)? What is the best choice I should plant with all factors considered? I can only plant one of these. I am in north Florida. During a hurricane some brackish water could wash in..it has done this before but I have never seen any trees die from it (satsumas, figs, bushes etc). I just don’t know which variety would survive and produce best coastally in Florida with some cooler winters... thanks.

Is the cause of this high humidity and rainfall or something else?

After a couple months

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado Disease
« on: June 05, 2021, 01:46:21 PM »
I can not tell what type of fungus has infected this avocado and is causing branch dieback. Could it be Phytophthora, verticillium wilt, fusarium, or laurel wilt? I have not seen any borer holes or signs of the LW vector beetle but cannot rule it out since it can also infect through roots. Whatever it is seems to take hold mid-branch and work it’s way to the ends. Also could it be multiple fungi species involved?
The white stuff is likely sap?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where can I go forage rootstocks?
« on: June 03, 2021, 01:22:31 PM »
There are several native species I want to collect for different purposes (blueberries, wax myrtle, sparkleberries, paw paws, Am. persimmons, red mulberries, quince, Chickasaw plums, etc but there are a lot of wildlife preserves and lots that I’m not going  to trespass or take from, so are there any specific places that are open to foraging/digging up native species or is it all illegal?!

Citrus General Discussion / Verna Orange
« on: March 27, 2021, 05:29:59 PM »
First time coming across this variety. Spanish type orange. Some sources say it’s of lesser quality than valencia.. I don’t know what that means? I enjoy tart citrus. Or sweet-tart. I’m not very fond of mostly sweet citrus, like navels and gold nugget mandarins..
Anyone tried this variety?

Citrus General Discussion / Another Young Seedling Flowering
« on: March 24, 2021, 11:05:02 AM »
Got a very young orange or tangerine seedling, about 3-4 inches tall, with a bloom about to open up. Somewhere between the age of 12-20 months.. was semi-neglected (grown in mostly sand and rarely fertilized..). Will post a picture later. Anyone else encountered this in citrus? (I assume this phenomenon could be more common in lemons and limes, how about the rest of citrus?)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dwarf coconut palm in a pot..?
« on: March 09, 2021, 09:14:26 PM »
Can this be successful: to grow a dwarf self-pollinating coconut palm in a 30+ gallon pot, keep it trained low and contorted (as horizontal as possible), perhaps trim or nearly defoliate it in the winter months to be brought indoors in a bright spot, keep the roots pruned, fertilized WELL, and actually get regular coconuts off it??

Temperate Fruit Discussion / The 'Florida Condition' with Temperates
« on: March 07, 2021, 06:33:09 PM »
I call it the 'Florida Condition'.. it affects what seems like mostly temperate fruit trees.. even varieties that seem as though they're getting the right chill hours and such..

they stagnate in growth

they grow all sorts of lichens

stagnate more

and eventually succumb.. maybe fully.. without ever achieving a true adult tree size and won't produce much if anything at all.

Many times it affects stonefruits.. For example, methley plums, some older Georgia peach cultivars, flowering cherries. Some types of roses, blueberries, even pears. Seen it happen to crape myrtles too! Even wild persimmons!

I understand neglect may have something to do with it, but a lot of these trees are grafted onto hardy rootstocks, right? Is it the extreme heat and humidity during summer that does em in, or what??

Citrus General Discussion / What is ‘Mandarin F” ?
« on: February 20, 2021, 02:27:15 PM »
If mandarin s.. sorry “manderin s” is presumably satsuma than what is manderin F?
According to these people’s satsuma tags they’re not even hardy under 32 degrees.

I cannot think of any mandarin or tangerine that starts with f? There are actually quite a few of these grafted trees around town labeled mandarin f and s

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Improved Huckelberries?
« on: February 16, 2021, 10:07:44 AM »
I have a lot of native huckleberries and have actually grown to like the taste as much or more than blueberries. Are there improved varieties of huckleberry? I have seen a good bit of variation in the wild ones..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mexicola flowering
« on: January 17, 2021, 11:33:22 AM »
Is it normal for a Mexicola grande to start flowering this time of year in north Florida? I’ve also had a Carrie mango do this..outside..  in mid-winter.. It hasn’t frosted a whole lot this year but it also has not been very warm the past 2 months either..

All apical buds pushing flowers..

Citrus General Discussion / Rooting Valencia cuttings
« on: January 05, 2021, 07:59:05 AM »
Is it possible to root Valencia orange from cuttings easily? I have a ton of branches somebody hacked down, and I can’t tell if it’s from a Valencia or sour orange (the fruit tastes like possibly a good sour or crappy Valencia...?? I reallly am having trouble telling..) but either way I’m going to try and propagate them all in fresh perlite..any suggestions welcomed! Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Most worthwhile subtropical fruits to grow?
« on: November 27, 2020, 12:54:58 PM »
What subtropical fruits able to take some degree of frost are the most worthwhile to grow in Florida? Adaptability to climate & soil, high price value (for fruit or saplings), rarity, landscape looks, and disease resistance are all factors involved..
