How cold hardy is vexator compared to common jaboticaba?
« on: September 11, 2023, 03:40:31 PM »
Hey all, so I got a bunch of vexators started this spring and they're doing fantastic overall, WAY healthier (less salt/ph sensitive) all around than most of the true jaboticaba I have, but I'm wondering how they stack up cold-wise. Slightly larger plinia and eugenia seem to do fine out here in the winter with some slight cold protection (they just go part dormant and get the red leaves) but I don't have experience yet with vexators.

I'll probably keep these guys inside while they're little, assuming we ever actually get winter out here in Phoenix, but anybody with any big ones know how they compare to say red hybrid jaboticaba when it comes to cold?

This doesn't really answer your question, but I had five second-year M. vexator seedlings in my greenhouse two winters ago and 4 of them died from the cool temperatures, the fifth was brought indoors to resuscitate in the middle of winter. But these were small seedlings, I'd guess more mature specimens would have done slightly better at least.

My greenhouse lows that winter were from upper 30s to mid-40s most nights, and the highs were only in the upper 40s to low 50s most days. So they may do better if it's mostly warm with only occasional cold snaps, rather than long periods of cool, overcast days.

The one survivor is still small but doing OK, but it comes in as a houseplant from early fall to late spring.

From my experience, less hardy than sabara, more hardy than red hybrid.

Thanks guys, good data. I've managed to keep red hybrids and sabara alive outdoors here once they get about a foot of growth or so, so I'll probably give the vexators a shot at acclimating when they get a little bit bigger. This year they'll probably be houseplants.

I have a vexator and 2 sabaras and 4 reds and a restinga in an area south of my house. There is a big tree
giving off protection in the area. All those trees are mature fruiting trees. When we were under
32F two Winters ago for 6+ hours all the trees were fine. I also have a yellow jabo in the mix.
Even with the large tree I think my whole yard was under 32F. Our dewpoint has to be different
than yours though.
