Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My mango tree is aliveeeee!! :)
« on: July 31, 2012, 01:33:20 PM »
Hahahaha! Thanks for all the suggestions guys.  The one that is actually blooming is not the one that recovered. Thats a different tree. The one that is blooming is a tree that I bought from TT. It's about 6 ft tall with a trunk that is 2 inches in diameter. Should I still pinch off the flowers? And if so do it now? And the reason why I'm doing this is to redirect its energy to the growth of the tree, correct? Just trying to understand the rationale. :)

So the one that made the recovery is a Keo Savoy mango tree and the one that is blooming is a Pim Saen Mun.  I'm a mango rookie so do mango trees usually bloom around this time?  The blooms are huge now and have like 7-8 branches with blooms.  My mom said that mango trees bloom in Dec and Jan but this is in Thailand.  My other question is that the mango tree is still small... you guys think that I will get mangoes and if so will they break my lil branches off?  I'm growing these in Southern California.  I have 2 others planted in the ground as well.  Two in my side yard and 2 on the hill.

Cool! Yay so happy that I have some growth above the graft. I really thought that this tree wasn't going to make it but looks like it might now! Would you pros recommend that I cut off the dead wood at the top? Also I went ahead and stuck this baby outside too. It's been inside since I showed you guys the first pictures of it dying.

5
Ok good bc the growth is above that! Yay! Thank you! =)

I'm confused.  The first picture?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can you find the graft on my mango tree?
« on: June 09, 2012, 05:17:52 PM »
Hello mango maniacs.  So my dying tree finally has some new growth!  I just don't know if it's above or below the greft because I can't find the graft.  Maybe you mango pros can find it.  I'm thinking it'a close to the bottom where is kinda angles?  Here are the pictures.

Beautiful pics Gary!

Oh I hope not! This is one of the sweet crunchy green mangos.  These Florida trees are grafted on Manila mango trunks?   Well all I can do is hope for the best.  Thanks again everyone.  I honestly didn't expect all the trees to make it but this is the one I REALLY wanted.

Ok outside but in the shade? And I should take the plastic bag off so it doesn't cook my tree right?

BSbullie- No AC.  In a sunroom with a huge window.  And I'm not even going to try cutting the trunk.  I'm def not at that level yet!  I'll probably end up cutting the whole grafted part off! Hahaha! =)

Thanks again everyone for all the helpful tips.

Mura- really?  Well most people suggested keeping the trees in the shade for the first couple weeks as they adjust to this environment.  So you think outside but somewhere shady?

Also, I took the tree out of the pot just to make sure that the root was not wet.  The root ball was moist but not wet so I just changed the soil out.  The pots DO have drainage holes...just at the very bottom so I was wrong.  Anyways I'm hoping this one makes it!  What is everyone's experience when your trees come to this point?  Do they usually make it or die?

12
Ok I pinched off all the leaves.  They were yellow/brown and crunchy...wasn't any green left so I just cut them all off.  I sprayed the bag and spray where the leaves were growing before.  Do I need a bigger bag or is this okay?

13
Oscar- thank you for the advice. Could I just use a plastic grocery bag or does it need to be clear? Would you tie it tight around the top of just leave it open?

Nancy- you made a good point and I just thought my pots don't have any drainage holes!!!! Rookie move. I bought them because they were pretty colors.  It looks like it may have some ventilation at the bottom but no holes. I will have my husband drill some holes in them.  I'm hoping the roots aren't soaking wet.
I only watered them every other day because the directions said to water it frequently.
I stuck my finger deep in the soil to see if it felt dry and it did so I watered them.

Also do you think it's too soon to put them outside? I received the trees Thursday evening.

So this is the first tree I bought.  A nam doc mai with the infamous LaVerne Nursery high graft.

And here are the 3 trees I ordered from Top Tropical.

Okrung Mango

Pim Sen Mun (over 5 feet tall!)

Keo Savoy-she was looking okay but now needs help

Is she dying?

They said that it's not uncommon for the trees to lose their leaves but she just doesn't look good.
I've kept the 3 shipped trees in indirect sunlight and have watered them every other day.  Today I applied the gromore seaweed extract.  Any other suggestions?  Or is this just what happens with shipped trees and I have to go through the motions.  Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yum! I just got my pim sen mun tree a couple of days ago.  It's in a 3 gallon pot and over 5 feet tall.  How long did yours take to fruit?  It looks delicious.  I like them sweet, crunchy, and green!

16
Ok cool! Thanks for the tip.  So glad everyone is so nice to the rookies! =)

17
Everyone was saying that I should keep them out of the direct sunlight because of the whole transport shock thing. Like give them time to slowly acclimate to California.

18
Bill- ok that's good to know. Keep me updated on your trees and I'll post more of mine!

Nancy- Thanks for the info. Yea I think I read that somewhere. As of now, I'm trying not to overwater them and the directions say no fertilizer for a month. So they are just hanging out. :)

For those of you who have had trees shipped from other states...I'm assuming it's normal for the leaves to be a little brown at the end?  I'm hoping my trees will perk up soon but I know it takes time.  So far, my three babies are sitting in  what is suppose to be a formal dining room with a large window (indirect sunlight).  I don't have them close to the window but I plan to slowly start moving them towards the light.  How long does it usually take your newly transported trees to perk up?

Beats the cost of shipping from Florida! And their pizza and hot dogs are pretty good! ;)

21
Bill- the middle tree is taller than me and I'm 5'1"....so it's about 5'5" maybe? Yeah I was pretty surprised on how tall it is and how thick the trunk was already. How are your trees doing? It's so exciting isn't it?

Mangofangdog- Hello there! :) Thank you for the advice on this and the other forum. Do you have any cloth that you use in particular to protect the trees with in the winter? I'm actually working this weekend so I won't be home. :( I would have loved your opinion.  I read alot of your posts as well as JFs.  Maybe next time. My husband is always on these car forums and sometimes meets up with these car guys which I thought was weird but now I understand! We should all have a southern California mango meet! Hahaha! :). Is anyone here growing the sweet crunchy green mangoes (Pim Sen mun and Keo Savoy) out here besides me?

22
So this is not the best picture but a picture when I first pulled them out. I'll post better ones later. These are all 3 gallons. 1. Okrung 2. Pim Seng Mun 3. Keo Savoy

23
So I got my trees in!  The packaging was very nice.  The trees from toptropics didn't look damaged.  The leaves are a little brown at the ends.  These were all 3 gallon trees but one of the trees is taller than me (I guess that's not saying much since I'm only 5'1" but still!). Anyways I went to the M & M nursery and they did not have ANY of the tropical soil left! They said that they are reformulating their mix so they have to get it approved first.   So I went with the ocean forest organic potting soil.  I hope I didn't make a mistake by potting the trees in 5 gallon containers.  The directions said pot the trees in sizes closest to their rootball to avoid root rot.  Do you guys think that will make a big difference? Do you also loosen the soil around the rootball?  The directions that came with the trees didn't say anything about that so I just placed the trees right in the containers in the potting soil to level it with the top of the container.  I then sprayed the leaves and watered them just a little since the soil was moist.  OMG I've never planted a tree in a pot in my life! I hope I did it okay!!!  ;D

24
Ok thanks for all the advice. My trees are suppose to arrive today. :) So do you recommend that I keep them in the pots until the initial shock wears off? Like keep them in a shaded area? Also I've read that I should spray them with water and then put plastic bags over them to increase the humidity. Do you guys recommend all this? And if so, for how long? Thank you again for all the tips! Trying not to start a mango tree massacre at my house!

25
Behi- ok thanks! Do you have a special technique or just read the instructions on the bottle?
Dnt- thank you! I will stop there tomorrow!
