Transplanting a mature mango tree?

(1/2) > >>

Kankan:
Anyone done it? Seems like it would destroy the tap root. Is it likely to survive?

TIA!

Rob From Sydney:
I reckon you cold do it, provided you took out a bunch of soil/roots, and gave the tree a prune above ground. If you proceeded to plant it right away, staked it, and kept it well watered, I reckon it's possible.

JR561:
Heavily prune it and dig around it as much as you can to preserve the roots when you pull it.

Going to need some kind of shade if its still hot out for a bit.

I have transplanted 4 medium-huge mangos. 2 are now multi-grafted and fruiting and another is getting grafted.

Me and my friend is digging out a 10+ yo mango tomorrow. You are right, you can't save the tap root unless you want to dig 4 ft deep. Mango roots are thick and hard to cut even with a reciprocating saw. It isn't necessary to save tap root since all of my trees had their tap root cut and rebound back. You absolutely need to shade it for at least 1 months+. If you can, save the dirt around the trunk since it's vital for the mango recovery. All the thick root can be trim. You also need to cut back SEVERELY. Keep only a few leaves. I cut back at least 90% of the leaves and 60-70% of the branches. Good luck

I got pretty high success rate for transplanting mango. My friend is 50%.

Is this the tree in Temecula? I see someone selling it. The picture look familiar. I would rescue mango if it's cheap but not for $200+ he was asking.

murahilin:
I used to work at a fruit tree nursery that sometimes sold their mature mango trees that were in the ground. Some of the trees were around 20 years old with very thick trunks.

What they did was first dig a trench around the tree a few feet away from the trunk. The trench was a few feet deep and a foot or so wide. Then they would leave the tree like that for a few months to get acclimated to the root pruning.

After a few months all they had to do was pick up the tree with a bobcat and deliver it to the buyer.
