Spring flowering loquats
« on: January 15, 2021, 12:39:18 AM »
Any truth to these claims? I can't seem to source any of these variety's in stock from online nurseries in the U.S, the couple of nurseries I've found sells grafted plants of Novak variety.

Ideally I'd want them on their own roots in case of complete dieback (zone 7a).

"‘Shambala’ and ‘Novak’ flower repeatedly..."

"Supposedly ‘Tanaka’ starts flowering in spring..."

"‘Rose Anne’ flowers once a year in the spring..."

I'm a Zone 7a/7b grower and I have been looking for the same cultivars. I think Rose Anne is unavailable in the US. Big Plant nursery is the only place I have seen it available and it is in the UK.

BTW my name is Quentin, leaving in the South of France near by Narbonne.
I am looking into propagating some loquat in France Iam looking for some scion/wood cuttings during the winter... I do quit a lot of exchange in France yet and would be happy to carry on abroad!

Welcome. As far as I know there are many loquat varieties available in Italy and Spain. Good luck.

vnomonee, I don't have Rose Anne, but have the other 3. I hope I get some flowers/fruits next year then I should be able to answer your question. To bad you missed my grafted loquat "advance order", its closed now but maybe next year.

vnomonee, a few more questions on the varieties you mentioned.

Where did you hear about the Rose Anne? Is it on sale here in the USA ?

I don't know if you will be able to find any of the varieties on their own roots since loquat cuttings can not be rooted, at least I have not heard of anyone being successful with rooted cuttings. You can try to grow out the seeds from those varieties and hope they come true to parent but it will take 5-7 yrs for seedling trees to fruit. I have 21 seedling trees growing that are over 5 yrs old and only 11 have fruited so far and maybe 10 are good tasting.

There's another forum I used to frequent, some zone pushers mentioned the varieties. I haven't seen them for sale in the US. I've heard loquats are difficult to root and they can take a long time to air layer (a year), purchasing a grafted plant and growing it outdoors in a pot then bringing it back inside for the winter while waiting for an air layer on a branch to root is probably the only easy way to get it on its own roots aside from growing from seed like you mentioned. In warmer zones like 8a grafted wouldn't be an issue but in 7a there is a possibility that the graft can be killed when we get extremely cold winters and I am not too keen on protecting and heating outdoor trees

Yes I agree, most nurseries will air layer or graft on seedling plants, depending on the size of the tree you buy. The little plants are usually grafted on seedlings, the larger plants (in 5 gal pots) are air layered.
