Hi everybody,

Raul is one of the best sellers in this forum and he never failed to please everyone with his dedicated service. I have the honour of the receipt of both the STAC and Spicy custard apple seeds from him on June 23, sent out via EMS in April 22, in excellent condition, before he posted for sale in August.

He's ATM on vacation and he really needs a good rest and relaxation as he has been working too hard in his physical activity.

Don't worry, he will respond to everybody upon his return from his vacation.

Hi Satha,

Very difficult to get D. decandra seeds ATM as it is out of season. Even if managed to get them, most of the time they won't germinate as the seed of the species has a very short viable period. The only way is to get a grafted plant from Thailand but the cost is high, roughly US$70 plus phytosanitary certificate around $20+ and EMS shipping is an extra. There is also no guarantee how long it will take to reach you as currently the global postal service is totally unreliable due to the pandemic.

I don't think importing plants to Sri Lanka is easy, as far as I know.

Regards,
Paul

Hi Giannhs,

Maybe this is the French nursery you are looking for that carries a comprehensive range of fruit trees:

La Pépinière du Bosc,
Route de Lodève,
34700 Saint Privat

CONTACT: M. Colicci
Email: contact@pepinieredubosc.fr

Unfortunately the nursery does not ship outside EU and they ignored any enquiry outside EU. The nursery got a good number of persimmon cultivars but they don't have the black kaki persimmon. Their catalogue has beautiful photos but narrated in French.

Excellent quality green sapote seeds received today delivered to doors, though spent 25 days in the post sent by EMS.
All seeds sink in water denote good viability.
Thanks Raul for your premium service and good quality stuffs! Continue the good work. Will patronize again in future.

Hi D-Grower,

I also germinated quite a number of Oriental pear and Euro pear seedling, viz. Kosui, Deveci, Ya pear, China Crown pear, Taylor's Gold and Red Williams, etc. All got no problems with any that I can observe, but some grow fast and tall, whilst some have stunted growth. Most apple seedlings develop serious white molds even under the very dry SA climate which made me scratching my head! I never use chemicals as I grow everything organically.

So far, I have not succeeded germinating persimmons like Fuju and D. kaki. Have you had experience of raising them from seeds? Kindly share.

I also just got 2 seedlings germinated from a single seed of minneola/Honey Bell that I luckily got from a store-bought fruit which is always seedless. They are growing very slowly, seems do not response to organic pellets. Can you tell how many years it need to take these tangelos to have first fruiting? Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for sharing a so exciting and encouraging post of precociousness of apply seedlings, for avid growers from seeds.

I am raising 50+ seedlings of apples, pears, oriental pears, Eurasian pears, persimmons and stone fruits, mostly bought from store or own fruits to be used as future rootstock for experimental purposes. I never encountered this precociousness but I found there are a great diversity of those seedlings as far as vigour, disease resistance and heights are concerned. I have to put some stunted ones and those heavily infected with fungi (mostly apples and seems that pears are immune) to the compost heap as I have limited space.

Please keep us updated. Thanks

Hi Raul,

Any idea how cold tolerant is this rare green sapote? Down to what temperature? At what altitude is it growing? Thanks for the info.

Hi W,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I've no luck with fruit seeds from Trade Winds except some rare vegetable and melon seeds.

You gave me encouragement that soncoya is a very easy plant to grow with vigorous growths always. I felt my soncoya are very healthy, outgrowing my 18 pink illama seedlings which were sown at the same time. I mist all my newly germinated seedlings with organic seaweed plant food and happy to see their glossy leaves getting bigger day by day.

Soncoya is a tropical, so I presumed you grow it in a greenhouse under zone 7b, right? How old is it? It is still in a big pot for easy management during winter time? Has it ever set any fruit for you? What are the fertilizer and water requirements? Kindly share. Thanks

Hi everybody,

I have successfully germinated some age-old Annona seeds including soncoya as follows:

•   Date sown: 14 December 2020, 10 Mexican soncoya (Annona purpurea) seeds bought via eBay
•   Date first seedling appeared: 22 December 2020
•   Time other seedlings appeared: within 2 to 3 weeks
•   Outcome of germination: 7 out of 10, i.e., 70% germinated with 3 failed due to damping off
•   Preparation:
o   Wash seeds with very dilute solutions of either hydrogen peroxide or thick bleach to remove bacteria
o   Tissue dried and cracked open at scar end of the seeds to make permanent openings
o   Soaked in 40% GA3 solution by dissolving 1 gram of the powder in a litre of water, for 24 hours
o   Rinsed with clean water before sowing
•   Medium used: half and half of spent Rooibos tea and coco peat
•   Preparation:
o   Wet the medium thoroughly and squeeze excess water off before lodging seeds into transparent plastic box
o   Insert the seeds half buried in the germinating medium with the opened scar end downwards
o   Placed the plastic box inside a 280-litre transparent storage box and covered with the storage box lid
o   Mist-sprayed everyday with very dilute H2O2 solution to prevent damping off or bacteria accumulation
Other information:
Soncoya is a good subject for pot culture and it can start fruiting in 1 to 3 years under optimal conditions
The fruit has medicinal uses in Mexico

https://hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/soncoya.html

Germination information from forum members: The information below was aimed at germination of ilama seeds but it can be applied for most Annona seeds, with good success rate even without the use of GA3
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=28910.msg327223#msg327223

I have considerable success using the above method in the germination of more-than-a-year-old seeds of pink/white ilama, atemoya, cherimoya and sugar apple. GA3 can really help with recalcitrant seeds like Annona.

Here're some photos, FYI:

I'm still a novice in growing Annona and let us share our experience and am hoping experts in the forum can give us a helping hand!

Stay safe and be happy!

What a bad news that Cliff has gone. He was so kind and helpful when he emailed me the 28-page PDF catalog and layout of his trees inside the orchard. The precise list is not found in the orchard's website.

I sincerely hope that his daughter has a drive to move on and takes the rein of the orchard to a new horizon.

Hi everyone,

In 2018, Huk Kam (Korean black-skinned persimmon) and Kurokaki (Japanese black-skinned Asian persimmon) were listed in the 28-page PDF catalog in England's Orchard & Nursery, McKee, KY selling as scions. I have no idea if they still have these scions for sale ATM.

You can try to contact Cliff of the aforesaid nursery @nuttrees@prtcnet.org if they are still available. Good luck.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Ebay Ilama seeds
« on: September 09, 2020, 12:23:33 PM »
Hi Satha,

He is an eBay vendor based in Acapulco, Mexico, not a forum member.

I remember long time ago, there was a forum member argued with the Romanian lady alleged she is selling non-genuine ilama seed but she fought back that she's selling the genuine ones and blacklisted the forum member for finger-pointing her.

Paul

15
Hi Satha,

I bought a few seeds from her 2 years ago and I am very sure it is not the real thing as the seeds were smaller than the genuine A. diversifloia/A. macroprophyllata (ilama) and it never germinated even if I used GA3.

Rather you get them from eBay vender naretmx and it is normally available in October/November. I bought 30 seeds (20 red + 10 white) from him last October and he is more reliable. Besides giving me some extra seeds, he also put in other gratis seeds.

I hope this info can help.

Jackalberry tree Diospyros mespiliformis from namibia

Who is interested

Hi Hendrik,

I am interested in some 10 to 20 seeds but depends on price. I would like to know if you or any South Africans have ever used the species as rootstock for grafting other cultivated Diospyros species like the Asian persimmons or the American persimmons. Is it termite-resistant as described in the websites? I got terrible termites problems here in Pretoria as they feed on the roots of my Asian persimmons and extremely difficult to get rid of them without killing the tree. Kindly confirm price, shipping, payment mode and availability.

Paul,

Hi Simon,

It's a pleasure. Please let me know if you have succeeded in grafting this 'Shek Kip' and I hope I can buy a piece or 2 scions from you, in due course. Thanks you in advance for your assistance in this connection.

Paul

Hi Simon,

Nice to meet you in the forum the first time. Actually, I have been communicating with your buddy Brad previously requesting for the supply of scions to be shipped to South Africa.

I am a retired Hong Kong government officer emigrated to South Africa since 1992. I saw your request for photos of the famous Chinese ‘Shek Kip’ (the proper name in Cantonese) longan. It has been very popular in Hong Kong in the 1960s but disappeared from the local market when Thai imports started to flush in. Its size is smaller in comparison with the Thai counterpart but sweeter and much more flavourful. Though it has long history of cultivation in China, especially in Guangxi and Guangdong provinces, it is still relative unknown in the West. That’s why you cannot find any information/photos in Google with the English name ‘Sek Ip’ or ‘Shek Kip’ which means “growing out of the gap or crevice (kip) of a stone (shek)”. There are plenty of information and photos when you Google with the Chinese name ‘石硤龍眼’. You can just copy the Chinese name and paste to either Google or Google Image to acquire the information you required. I have no idea if you can read Chinese but there is no problem if you use Google Translate to interpret the contents narrated in Chinese, though the translation is clumsy and far from desirable. Hereunder are some links that might be useful to you: -

Hi Xun,

I am also interested to know in what medium you packed your Red Longan seeds for shipment. I have had many bitter moments for numerous shipments of ordinary longan seeds from Thailand and Suriname in the past 5 years. They arrived just shriveled and never germinated as they were packed either dried or vacuum packed. Longan is indeed has a very short viable period and old seeds simply fail to germinate.

Thanks for the info.
Paul

24
Hi,

I should be most grateful if you could furnish more details of the Red Longan:

1) How many years will it take from germination to first fruiting under optimal condition?
2) Roughly what is the size and weight of the fruit?
3) Do you ship via EMS?

Thanks
