Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango in central Italy: an experiment.
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:41:15 AM »
It could be due to soil micronutrient deficiencies. I've read that Boron (I believe) prevents premature mango drops. That's why soil amendment, natural, products like Azomite can help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Favorite Banana Variety?

I haven't tried allot of bananas, but Manzano (known also as Silk Fig in Trinidad) is my favorite.

hmmm......math time!

1 acre = 43560 sq ft
674 mango trees per acre = 64.6 sq ft per tree.

my backyard = 50ft * 35ft = 1750 sq ft
no. of trees for the space = 27.08 trees.

Gotta show the girlfriend this. We've got space for 13 more trees  ;D .
Math is absolute!!!

Cool video and thanks for sharing Mr. Clean. Though its a mass comercial technique, it talks about everything the door yard mango grower can use (except for chemicals for balanced blooming). Tipping, selective pruning, and 7ft height managing and umbrella shaping....we're on the right track.

On another note, any one else noticed/or noticing that tipping induces vegitative growth? My lightly tipped Maha and Cushman are on their 6th growth flush since this May. Non-tipped terminals are pushing growth as well. If I want fruit next season, it's gotta stop. One time N application (2-10-10) early August 1 cup each.

Yeah. The trunk that faces the sprinkler has the red iron well water stains. I'm more concerned with the wrinkling, curling, and "soft body" light green look of these young leaves. Did a soil acidifier chelate drench.

Thanks foryour thoughts. I have a Kari (Kary) but I never tasted fruit from it yet. Saw and was tempted to buy a small Sri K loaded with fruit for it's size (7-8) but the Hart (Harte) sounds very interesting. Who is SoFla is selling it  ;D .

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Pine bark fines

The Buschel Stop sells em. ~$2.50 a bag.
http://www.thebushelstops.com/Home_Q4JU.html

The is one one Griffin road about 2-3 miles West from I 75 on the left.

I must say that the Pine Bark Fines they sell dont like other Pine bark fines in sourced in other states that looks similair to the expensive orchid bark ones.

The Hart sounds real nice.

http://www.echonet.org/content/fruitInformation/624

'Hart' is a white-skinned cultivar, pearlike in flavor, described as sweet and delicious. Fruits are small and delicate. Trees are small and easy to manage.

Looks like anthracnose russeting. Seen mangoes with this type of ough, rough skin but the innards are unaffected though.

Nice.  Another fellow Trini  ;D . How come you didn't go with a Julie ::) . Since the 70's huh. Trinidad has changed allot- even from the late 90's when I left- much more compared to the 70's. Calypso is a dying art. I try to visit every summer when all the fruits are around as well as every other Christmas for the food and festivities. Welcome to the forum bobbyjo  :) .

I've got a Pickering as well, and it looks like your Pickering is flowering. They may all very well be flowering. You gonna let it hold fruit? Maybe one each tree  :D .

Stud of a Keitt  ;D . How did it taste?

I'm yankin' out my Lancetilla for a Neelam tomorrow. Such a shame as Lance has some lovely bushy growth after being pugged exactly one year ago.
:(

I'm a type "A". I only grow what I've eaten, loved, and have space for. All of which is tropical in nature. I'd love to have a jackfruit, malay apple, and hog plum tree in my yard. But they require too much space that a mango tree or two could have occupied otherwise  ;D . Mangoes are King, so thats what I'm sticking with. I could be evolviing into a border-line B since as of late I have no qualms buying mango cultivars that interest me that I have no space for and don't mind keeping them in their nursery pots they came in.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tolbert mango (Torbert, Tolbet, Torbit)

;D Thanks Squam. My soil is pretty sandy and doesn't flood with heavy rains. The ferts I use are 2-10-10 and foilar sprays/ soil drenchs have little or no trace of N according to analysis. I have a 6 yr old inground Julie and never had anthracnose problems with it so I may have luck with the Cogshall. I was pretty impressed with the Cogshall tree when I saw it. Did allot of work moving other trees out of the way to get a more thorough look at. It had 7-9 branches already with 5-6 tips swollen and about to pop. Looked in good condition and seemed to me ever more "dwarf-er" than the Julies they had there. I'm definitely considering it.

Harry, Squam, thanks for the feedback. Saw it in a HD amid the numerous Tommy Atkins and Glenns. The most info on it was the pdf Squam linked to. Will have a look again at it tomorrow if it's still there. Depending on how I feel...who knows. Just because  :P .

Saw an awesome looking Cogshall barely 2 ft tall, bushy like a hedge and trunk base 7"-8" thick. Never had a problem with anthracnose. I'm having thoughts of uprooting/ giving away my 2nd Julie tree (1 yr inground).  :o

Any one tasted it? Better yet, Harry, do you grow it ?  ;D

Thoughts about the fruit and tree (production, disease etc) would be apprecieated.

Got the PFSHS 11:201-202: 2004 pdf already.

How about the "Brown Sugar" variety. How does it compare taste/texture wise to the rest? Seems like tall trees.

Thanks for the info mangomandan.

SWRancher and ofdsurfer, this is great news. I've got an 6' Alano in ground 1 yr bearing for the first time with 6 immature fruit on it. What's the age and height of your Alano trees? I hope to be enjoying some by Nov/Dec.
