Did I buy sick mango trees?
« on: March 11, 2020, 06:55:13 PM »
Hello, just yesterday I purchased 2 mango trees from my local yard store. The owner told me last week he was ordering mango trees from the nursery in Florida, and told me to stop by yesterday to see them (so I know they just arrived yesterday). I purchased a Tommy Atkins and a Alphonso breed. After doing research online on how to transplant and maintain trees, I stumbled upon several signs and symptoms of diseases and am concerned I may have bought ill trees!

Any ideas what these little black stains on the leaves and stem could be? Should I even plant them?
The first 3 images are the Tommy Atkins, the rest are Alphonso.

They’re fine. Every tree has some sort of defect, spot, bug bite on it. It’s natural

Thanks for the replies guys, glad to see this forum is so active!
Should I treat these trees with anything, or just plant and maintain routinely? Thanks again!

They look normal, plant them, full sun and water as needed, of course keep the drip line cleared and mulch or not.
I personally don't fertilize my mango trees and they look great. Mostly just run the hose from the well on them if it hasn't rained.

Somebody who knows about mangos has told me that a young mango to be planted must have tiny buds and purple leaflets at the top, a sign of growing. It it looks like that, some grown leaves dry at the end is not a worry, only the soil must be ample, not rocky, and must receive plenty of sunlight. Must not receive much wind when young, and must have plenty of water if it is in full sun. In short, it is the top that shows the vitality of the tree, and not the big leaves.

Rocky soil is fine as well, just make sure you have adequate moisture.

Every indication I see on your trees looks like a product from Zill nursery:
- T-bud grafted very low
- type of pot
- type of bamboo
- tying method and material of bamboo

You can't ask for a better product, they are the most professional mango nursery around.

Thank you all for your reassurance and words of advice. It has made my planting experience very hopeful and exciting! Here they are planted in my backyard. I hope I did an acceptable job. They are 11 feet apart.

On a final note, would anyone know where to find reliable resources on how to maintain and care for my young trees at this tender stage and hereon out? Thanks again for everyone's support!

Thank you Pineislander for the video link.  That has given me the confidence to prune correctly.
