I apologize if this question highjacks this thread but I too am going to SE Asia for Christmas (Vietnam specifically) and was wondering if we can bring seeds back? "sneak" seeds back? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Chris

Hi Adam, could you tell me what Myrciaria/Plinias you have that you can ship to SoCal? I'm psyched right now since I have Sabara, Red, and Yellow fruiting for the first time...well. technically 2nd for Sabara since the first was in July. Thanks, Chris

Damn, that sucks big time Mark. I have often thought about that scenario but never heard any actual cases. I will keep my antenna up. Best regards, Chris

I have neglected my 5 gallon Tamarind and it is maybe 3 feet tall and wide. The tree flowered for the first time this year with (as expected) no fruit set. I have noticed it needing MORE water than less water during the warmer months. Otherwise, zero special care at my place...I had meant to plant it out but got some OCD on rarer trees to collect and was put "on the back burner". Chris

Awesome as usual Adam! I would greatly appreciate any info (from anyone) on a possible seed source on the down-low ;)  I need this in my life. Thank you- Chris

Hey Luc, was the fruit tasty? I have seen videos and have done some reading and I have a piqued interest.  If you really enjoyed eating them then I might be interested. Best regards, Chris

Stuewe & Sons (stuewe.com) has all the deep pots you desire -up to about 3gal or so (i think). I have done some bartering to get some used, deep 3 gallon pots at various L.A nurseries. Those deep pots are hard to find around here. Chris

The real question is how much $ to dig up that beautiful mango tree Frank?  ;) I am totally onboard with the Manilla rootstock as the de facto root stock for so.cal. You're a true champion Frank. Thanks, Chris

Last weekend I saw a 20ft avocado loaded with fruit in Laguna beach by Whole Foods...2 blocks from the water. Chris

Hi Sapote, there are plumeria's in and around my neighborhood in Old Towne, Orange that are up and over the roof of a single story home. I believe at least 12 feet with trunks of approaching a 1' in diameter. Sorry no pic's but I will snap a few if I think about it. Chris

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Planting next to a stump.
« on: September 04, 2015, 01:58:01 AM »
NewGen, i agree with WGphil- thats maybe 20-40 minutes of work with a sharp shovel/pick ax. I have dug up larger trees AND transplanted them so ripping out that small stump would be fairly easy. I would just dig it so that there is a (roughly) 3 ft. diameter hole so you can put in a nice sized tree. Also, if the area is dry-make it moist...it will make your job easier. Good luck, Chris

I have to agree with Jack- thats what I thought once the photos were provided. With an avocado that has sparse foliage the white paint is a must. Good luck, Chris

I give them the "dual ear slap"...they scoot to the opposite side of the branch but that doesn't escape the slap. This works great for a couple (like I have) but not so great if you have a significant population. Chris

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Strawberry Papaya from Brazil.
« on: August 27, 2015, 02:50:52 AM »
Hey NewGen, all the papaya i've bought have grown- no problem. Just clean the seeds and figure out the planting situation. Note that it is easy to just throw down a "clump" of seeds, but remember that most will sprout and you will wind up with a tangled mess on your hands. If you have some seed trays and limit your seed count to 3 or 4 a cell, then you could cull the plants that aren't up to snuff. Take it with a grain of salt- Chris

Nice! Good luck Sami. Chris

Hi Simon, I had about 20 fruits and zero chicken tongue. So, needless to say, this thread intrigues me. Chris

This is good news. My Brewster produced it's first crop this year after 3 years in the ground. The only negative of the fruit was the flesh to seed ratio...the seeds were massive. Chris
