Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: grafting guava
« on: July 02, 2023, 09:21:18 PM »
HELP !!!!
Ok you all gave helpful info on grafting the guava trees together.  I have now tried every type including the approach and ZERO success.  On the approach type is there a specific depth of the cut etc.
Even better is someone in the LA area interested in making a cocktail guava tree,  giant white turnbull, red malaysian, ruby supreme.  I'll buy it from you.
I can graft other fruits but NOT guava  :'(
Thanks Bob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / HLB
« on: April 07, 2023, 10:34:51 PM »
I'm in LA and have a lemon and orange tree.   don't have the HLB disease but read an article in fruit growers mag about the Australian finger lime plant and how it's immune to HLB.
So the question is if I graft a scion from this Australian tree on to the orange and lemon.  Will the lemon and orange become resistant to the HLB??   When you graft is it kind of like a blood transfusion where proteins from the Lime ooze into the orange and lemon making them resistant,  I hope?
Just a wishful thought

Tropical Fruit Discussion / grafting question
« on: March 20, 2023, 02:53:30 PM »
Hi
I see different methods and wondering what is correct?  After wrapping the scion and grafting to the tree.  Does it need to be left as is or covered with like a brown paper bag?   I've seen both?
Thanks

shouldn't they be the same size so the cambien matches up

Hi
we have 3 guava trees.  white turnbull, red malaysian,  tropical pink.  All are about 8ft tall.  I have been trying to graft to the largest,  white turnbull with zero success.  Interested in saving space and have all 3 on 1 trunk.  Anyone have a graft method that works?
Thanks Bob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: sewer roots

sorry
should have clarified.  Are any of the sewer cleaning products safe for the underground pipes?  Like they won't eat away at them.  I had a friend just tell me you can have a liner installed in them as well

Seanny
pots are out of the question.  3 avocados,  2 at 15ft 1 at 30ft
fig at 15ft.  loquat at 15ft , plum at 10ft.   and those are just the ones near the sewer path.  there are others, Mango, guava, that are 20-30ft from the line but roots travel !
does anyone use the Robic foam and leave it in for 6-8 hours and is it safe?
thanks

house was built in the 50's in hawthorne ca.
i thought they were clay and it's sewer, not septic.  The entry point to the clean out is PVC so it may be that the entire way but not sure because they added on prior to us owning the house.

I know this is a bit off topic but if others are like me and have a standard size tract home lot and it's fully loaded with fruit trees etc, then you probably have encountered roots in your sewer line?  I know i have some because i had it scoped.  Looking for suggestions on how to keep it cleaned out, either by a plumbing clean out or some safe root kill product.  I have been using the robic foaming type but looking for other useful info
thanks

Hi
have a 4 year old fino de jette that has not fruited yet.  It flowers, drops the flower, starts to bud and then drops off.
I was told it's self pollinating?
is that correct?
Thanks Bob

Tropical Fruit Discussion / avocado question
« on: February 12, 2022, 10:07:46 PM »
Hi
We are lucky to have 3 mature avocado trees.  One of them is budding like crazy right now but all the leaves are turning brown,  many falling off.  I don't really water or fertilize but we did have 10 inches of rain in December
Does anyone have any idea if this is a problem or have a solution?
Thanks

thank you all.   never knew mangoes would bloom in the winter.  I may leave a couple on and see what happens.  I had planned to pick all before maturity because the tree is not big enough this year.  next year for sure   ;D

Hi
in our yard we have several fruit trees.  in The back yard a lemon, orange and guava.  This last year they got sooty mold real bad and had mealybugs as well.  I have used treatments but my question is...
How do you keep sooty mold from starting?  reason i ask is that is the first sign and then all the other things show up later, ants, whitefly, mealybugs
thanks Bob
