Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help with rooting mulberries - stage 2
« on: March 29, 2023, 04:15:40 AM »
Rooted Himalayan Red using Hormex, bottom heat 75F, humidity dome, and peatmoss seedling mix. However still getting less then 50% rooting taking.

2
Mulberry, Loquat, Strawberries, and Blueberry.

3
Yeah Olosapos are good. I have a 8 year old tree in ground hopefully it produces fruit soon.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Yet another soil thread
« on: February 19, 2023, 02:34:24 PM »
I find citrus is not very sensitive to coir mixes, a good citrus rootstock should have decent salt tolerance.

5
I have a Sugar Belle it's near oak trees in Florida. It appears to be healthy even though it only gets rain and is seldomly fertilzed. The Xie Shan and Yuzu did not do well, yuzu died and Xie Shan does not look as healthy.

6
Jujube, Figs, Loquat, Psidium longipetiolatum, Eugenia aff. involucrata, Myrcianthes pungens

7
Loquat and Dragon Fruit are both pretty bullet proof in containers.

8
Kei Apple has a good deal of flavor variation between strains. A good sweet with some sour selection is worth getting a clone of.

9
St Lucie County is good if your closer to the river, intercoastal, or ocean 5mi or so. I grow all types of tropicals and subtropicals outside and get little to no leaf burn recently. Coconuts and mangos grow really well. Soil is sandy slightly acidic with a couple chunks of clay scattered at deeper depths.

10
Trees were just released.

Are the trees going to head on bus tonight or tomorrow to LA?

11
Myrica cerifera is growing very well for me here in Southern CA. I have not looked for Myrica californica plants recently, recall it being more expensive and harder to find. The native plant movement in CA prices a premium on it.

Thanks Ill keep it in mind next season. I already have too many cuttings rooting and more in the fridge. Think Im out of tree pots

No problem, I have stopped collecting figs for now. Only room for about 10 varieties in the rotation. So far very impressed with CDA, Buzzone, and Moscatel Preto.

13
I already have CDA and SJDK but this is a solid deal for anyone else

Never heard of buzzone. What’s the origin?

Buzzone is Italian, it is one of my favorite varieties. Flavor is really good and its production and pest resistance is very good. It also has the longest season of fruit production of all the figs I am growing. Dark fig and Mt Etna type. Should be a staple in anyone's fig collection. I rate flavor at 4 out of 5, production 4 out of 5, vigor resistance to humidity and pests 5 out of 5. Southern figs has a good thread on Buzzone Nero fig.

I have the following fig varieties cuttings for sale. Will take fresh cuttings, 6inch or larger. All three have been verified after having fruit.

$12 per cutting with minimum (4) mix match varieties + USPS shipping either flat rate small or medium box depending on amount of cuttings and size.

Buzzone, has been a bullet proof variety. Closed eye produces long season and holds up to humidity really well. Seems like a really good selection for Florida and humid locations.
CDA, Constantine de Algerie, Large yellow/green fruit with excellent flavor and small eye. Reported to do well in humid locations.
“Super Jumbo “ (DK) series, Very large fruit with good flavor, recommended for semi arid to arid locations with low pests pressures.

Yes your close to zone 9a. Check out "sunset zone" 8 or 9 in California may be closer to your climate and latitude.

I grew stenocereus Q. From seedlings Stephen was selling years ago.
They grew an inch in some years. Never got taller than 3 inches.
What will actually grow and fruit in your location matters too.
Opuntia and cereus Peruvianas is a weed around here.

The Stenocereus queretaroensis seeds were collected in southern Zacatecas, were they are grown in lower elevations. They need warm nights above 70f to really grow fast.

It may be best to graft them to Cereus sp. rootstock.

So, does this thing need chill to produce cones? Is there any chance it would do well in Florida?

Little chance, maybe if it was grafted to native pine. This pine is prone to fungal attack. It needs cooler arid nights to thrive, it is native to a small area in Zacatecas above 4k ft elevation.

I germinated them in past but lost the seedlings to damp off stage due to fungal attack.

Growing Stenocereus queretaroensis out the white is actually the weakest seedlings. The Purple and Red were the most vigorous, also the purple and red turn redish/purple hue during the winter cooler periods.

Jabo, White Sapote, Macadamia should all do well for you. Would also consider Psidium species and hardier Eugenia species. For annonas would go with Cherimoya and Atemoya. Longan should well long term.

Thanks for the suggestions! Good call on Psidium, do you have any favorites? I do have young strawberry and lemon guavas as well as whatever the white available from Four Winds Growers.
I really don’t know much about Eugenia yet. I have a couple Surinam Cherry that are doing pretty well. I had fruit from a friend and found it very interesting. Maybe I need to look more into this genus…
Macadamia! Dang! I hadn’t thought about that at all. Gonna need to give that one some consideration for sure.

My favorite Psidium so far has a Tawainese Emperor type seedling I tasted. Locally sourced the Diamond guava from Exotica nursery are really good. Large superior selections of Mexican cream guava and the Vietnamese green crunch seedless guava are worth it as well.

You have to be mindful on size of guava and ripening period. Some of these tropical large guavas like ripening into November and will slow or stall ripening on cool to cold weather.

I also like Psidium robustum from huertasurbanas,  I tried my first fruits this year. The flavor is unique and better then strawberry guava in my opinion. Any of the Psidium sp. That huertasurbanas gives good review of are probably worth trying.

On Eugenia sp. Surinam Cherry is a good one. If you like sour pitangatuba is another good one. I also like Eugenia luschnathiana. I hear good things about Eugenia lutescens.

I have a solo tree in FL, this one does well in frost free FL. I am not sure if I need another plant to get fruit.

I am hoping it is self fertile. I have tasted the dried fruit and it has a great flavor. I may try taking some cuttings and try to root it.

Pitaya, Stenocereus queretaroensis. Its the sweetest with the best flavor, its like eating raspberry jam. A good dragon fruit is hard to be though, and consistently ranks high up in cacti fruits.
