Rain has helped harvest white sapote fruits. Mainly Pike and Vernon.  Rotting well, smell of vinegar, don't walk there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lara Farms tree source
« on: March 12, 2022, 09:07:27 AM »
Based on TFF member Kona Fruit Farm's posting on Lara Farms, I ordered two Pickering Mangos from them.  They arrived yesterday from Florida to CA in excellent shape.  1 gallon pots, very well packed, nicely grafted trees.  Good price, reasonable shipping.  I have been planting mangos for a couple of years counting on "global warming" and so far they are doing well.  Many are dwarfs and will remain in 15 gal pots, but half are planted out.  I have plants from other Fla vendors, but am very impressed with price, quality, and packing from Lara Farms.  These 1 gal trees will spend a year or so in the greenhouse before planting out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Plant o Gram mangos delivered
« on: June 21, 2020, 06:18:07 PM »
Today (Sunday) FedEx delivered my Kent and Honey Kiss Mangos ordered from Plant O Gram.  Both were easily 3 gallon size, 3 1/2 to 4 ft high.  Thick caliper, healthy, and not a leaf missing or damaged.  From Fla to Ca the packing was excellent, pot covered and heavily wrapped, tree staked and tied, then both in tall cardboard shipping box.  Had a special on free shipping too.  Ordered due to Corvid 19 and not wanting to travel south.  Cleared a part of the property that is the warmest and planted 2 green sapotes, a jackfruit, couple more avocados, canistel, flying saucer fruit, and two mangos.  All except mangos have been growing here in and out of the greenhouse.  Hoping to take advantage of global warming...45 years ago freezes killed macadamias regularly, now we rarely see even light frosts.  We'll see about the mangos.........  Now looking for litchi varieties to order from PlantOGram.

Finally beat the possums and raccoons to fruit from my John Herd tree.  Good sized fruit, excellent texture and flavor.  A keeper.  Leaven's Hass next to it.

From Guadalajara back yard, Mexicans call it a guava.  Anything more specific?  Tasty, a bit sweet/sour.  Seeds look like Mexican Guava.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Montoso Gardens
« on: May 03, 2014, 11:03:23 PM »
Just received another shipment from Bryan at Montoso Gardens.  Nice quality plants, and exceptional packing.  Cannot believe these plants sent from Puerto Rico to California can arrive in such perfect shape.  Took quite a while to unpack due to their thoroughness.

2nd year of harvesting avocado grown from a seedling: large size, rich creamy flesh.  It's a keeper!  Seeds planted years ago for rootstock, this one is not going to be grafted over.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mammea americana

Anybody growing mamee apple ( mammea americana), a relative of the mangosteen? I've got six seedlings that seem to be unaffected by our cooler weather.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Jaboticaba collection
« on: July 23, 2012, 10:06:39 AM »

Well, not really a collection, just the one that I've had over 25 years.  The pole is 8 ft, the dog is a mini Australian shepherd.  Tree is hardy to freezes, produces well, large sized fruit. (I use to post over on GW as SLOJACK and posted some photos there one time.)  Don't know where I got it so many years ago, but hung around with the likes of Paul Thompson and other early pioneers of CRFG and shared many plants and seeds.

My question to the Jabo experts is in regard to pruning...There are many dead twigs throughout the tree, tree could use pruning.  So how is the tree pruned for favorable fruiting, continued growth?  Dead twigs, no problem, it is already well shaped.  There are multiple trunks coming from the ground. I did girdle to induce fruiting (tried pulling branches to horizontal-didn't work).  Did get fruits on girdled branches first, then all over the tree.  Girdled branches have recovered.
