Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: For Sale: Mulberry Cuttings
« on: September 14, 2022, 10:48:14 PM »
Both the White Pakistan and Australian Green have very similar fruit, same size, taste is the same. I have three different versions of the white fruit mulberry. The Australian Green is a more vigorous grower and seems to be easier to graft, but right now, I'm only cutting the White Pakistan tree since it's getting too tall. The White Pakistan seems to be more of a semi-dwf growing habit while the Australian Green grows large fast.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Seanny, thanks for posting the photo and mentioning your method to do the air layer. I was thinking of doing something similar since my dad who was a bonsai instructor always used pots on the air layer branch for his bonsai. Good to hear it works, my previous years air layers (10) all had roots but after I moved them into small pots, 70% died in one year.

This year I will do the normal air layer, then once i see roots, I will try your pot method with soil, it sounds like a good idea. I have some large air layers going now (2-3" diameter, 6-8ft tall), so I will make sure to try your method. I plan to air layer maybe 20 branches so I can get as much of the branches off before I cut the tree down.

Here's my large Brester lychee tree photo from 2021.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Tasting Loquats For 2022 Season

John, the brix table is just a FYI reference, not showing which one is the best tasting. Some people like to know what the sugar content is on fruits, so I decided to add this table while I was doing my taste test. I have some other group taste test photos that I need to gather so I can post here later.

mbmango, the KT06 & KT23 had many fruits and the brix reading is accurate, it registered very high. I tested many fruits to be sure. It will be interesting to see the same test next year when most of these varieties should be at least second year fruits. My Kt06 & KT23 trees are large but just had fruits for the first time in 2022.

This year I only tasted fruits from 43 varieties but next year I hope to taste most of my 78 varieties if they all fruit on my mult-grafted tree.

Johnny, your trees look great. My large Brewster is so big and growing over the house that I need to figure out how to air layer some of the large branches so I can cut back the tree before I dig it up. My tree has been in ground for over 30yrs so I'm worried the roots are growing under my concrete slab foundation. When I planted the tree, it was too close to the corner of my house (about 4 ft), big mistake. But it makes so many fruits I keep delaying cutting it down. My goal is to air layer as many branches as I can (once I figure out how to get good success) then dig out the tree next year.

Here's the preliminary Brix reading I made in May 2022. I didn't have my brix meter until May so I was not able to take brix readings of some of my varieties.

One note on Big Jim White, I had only 2 fruits and when i made the brix reading the fruits were overripe and wrinkled.

It's to difficult to list the best tasting since everyone's taste is different, some like it sweet and tart, others like it very sweet only.

But I will post some group taste tests I did, and also a preliminary brix reading for the ones I had time to take the readings. Next year I should be able to update the brix table and hope to get a reading from most of my varieties if they all have fruits next summer (78 varieties).

Lower 48 states, if you state does not allow seeds from CA, then please don't order it.
Paypal payment only. Send me PM if interested.

Yeah, my large lychee tree had no fruits this year, must be alternate bearing or I just put to many air layers on the branches.

Here's the photos of my Kohala fruits I picked. Just doesn't turn nice brown color like Chuleon or the ones I see at the store.

Anyone eating longan fruits in SoCal?

My trees had good fruit set, but the fruits never turns brown so I decided to pick them. They taste good, flesh to seed ratio is not good, but many fruits. It is supposed to be Kohala. I'll add some photos later today.

Updated items for sale 9/13/22.
This sale is for a week or when cuttings are gone.

These varieties will not root easily from cuttings, so you should be grafting them.

Younghans is supposed to be very good tasting. I have a small multi-grafted tree and the Younghans grafted branches are the only ones with nice fruits, hope to taste some in a month.

I have approach grafted many white sapote seedling trees for similar results. I used three white sapote seedlings to approach graft them together. I let them grow for 4 years before putting grafts on the tree. This tree grew 2X faster and taller (18 ft) than my other seedlings trees. I was also able to put on 34 varieties on the tree and they had nice large fruits. I think this method works fine for any fruit trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Time for air layering ??
« on: September 05, 2022, 03:29:04 AM »
I have air layered avocados with no issues. They are pretty much just like air layering lychee tree. I did two avocado air layers in 2020. Both avocado branches I air layered were fruiting branches. One large air layer was my Jan Boyce branch which had many flowers and small fruits (see photo of before and after below). The other air layer was a Hawaiian seedling tree which also was fruiting when I took the air layer. The Jan Boyce is the larger air layer branch, it was about 2-3" diameter, about 8-9 feet tall. I did thin out some branches but left some small fruits on the air layer. The Hawaiian seedling branch was only 1" diameter and about 7 feet tall.

These photos are my Jan Boyce, before I put on the air layer, after I removed the air layer, and 1 year after it was growing in the pot and had fruits.

The fruits on my tree is already ripe, I have been picking/eating them now.

Yes, I can still take some cuttings of the Matsumoto persimmon.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus macrophylla
« on: August 23, 2022, 08:48:24 AM »
pagnr, thanks for this article, very informative. My macrophylla is a rootstock on Eureka lemon and has been doing well for 30yrs, gets many lemons, fruit size is good. I let a few of the rootstock shoots grow to see what type it was and now those branches have grown as tall as the Eureka lemon (12-15 ft). Fruits of the macrophylla is large, when it turns yellow, I will pick some fruits and post the photos.
