Citrus General Discussion / What lime is it that I had in Costa Rica?
« on: October 25, 2020, 12:06:24 PM »
Trying to figure out what lime I had in Costa Rica and loved.  It was green with lots of brown blotches on the skin, orange flesh, semi sweet and not too sour.  They referred to it as limon.  I think it’s a rangpur but not sure.  Trying to figure out the exact species.

I’ve got a Fredrick on the way.  I’ll definitely be checking miners as sometimes they have good stuff.

Well, what would it be and more importantly.  How do I get it?  I have a small beach lot so space is limited but I got room for maybe one or two containers next to a fence.  Any input on container size?

What kind of plastic sheeting is that?  I kinda want to do a mini version to jump start next growing season as well.  Looks pretty good!

Funny how my friend hacked out his condor, american beauty, delight etc because they were not self pollinating and even swarms of pollinators couldn't do the job. He now has trimmed his collection to a dozen or so of the best self pollinating heavy producers which include a few of his own hybrids. Ecuadorian big yellows were worth keeping as were Colombian red and a few purples, and viet crosses. Another friend who personally escorted deserted king from Israel back to Queensland now considers them over rated trash but I think in the right climate they may be acceptable. Some of the FNQ locally grown types including Palmerston purple and purple princess seem to have potential.

I’m going to be bummed if my Condor, American Beauty and delight don’t self pollinate.

My friend grabbed some DK cuttings in Israel and grows them. He can't give away cuttings now. They may have been marketed a bit hard and over-exposed and he doesn't rank them as anywhere near his best varieties.

Huh, good to know.  Still curious though.

I looked at Cape Gooseberry and they seem a good fit.  Don’t get me wrong I’ve worked out a few tricks to get a little heat to my plants.  Most are full sun on the deck where it gets pretty toasty and some corrugated tin along the fence isn’t just to look artsy, it retains and radiates heat to the plants next to it.  The deck runs about ten degrees hotter than the rest of the yard so I’m able to have upper 70’s if the sun is out.

We are fairly similar to Santa Cruz so you know my struggles, lol.  I’m like 300 yards from the surf so it’s an interesting micro climate to work in.

Great ideas so far.  It’s kinda weird to research plants in reverse.  Most info is geared towards lowest growing temp instead of ideal temp.  So searching by similar region is a much better idea.

I really like the passiflora suggestion!

So I’m located in Morro Bay CA in zone 10a.  So when I look at many tropical fruits I’m good to go but I have another issue.  It rarely gets above 70 degrees, it’s like mid 60’s year round.  So while nothing really dies, nothing really thrives.  Don’t have room for a greenhouse.  Only have room for container plants.  What thrives in these kind of temps?  I got some unknown banana trees, dragon fruit and some finger limes.  Looking to expand.  No room for large trees (avocado) unfortunately.

Thanks!

Anyone know where to find some Desert King cuttings?  Trying to round out my micro garden.  I’m already on the waiting lists for growdragonfruit.com but not sure how often they replenish.

Is anyone familiar with the eBay seller linthai75?  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Condor-Variety-Bright-Purple-Flesh-Dragon-Fruit-2-new-Cuttings-8-12/124096250872?hash=item1ce4b683f8:g:TgYAAOSwU2BeVJXA

Wanted to make sure they are legit before I waste three years planting some Condor I got.  So far got some nice stuff from other forum members but wasn’t sure about the eBay stuff.  Thanks everybody!

^Yep, that one.  Trying to figure out what it really is?  The variety they list isn’t self fertile but they claim it is.  Little confused.

Anyone know what variety Home Depot is selling currently?  It’s supposedly red fruit and self pollinating.  It’s tag says it’s by Sunburst oranges but when you go to the site it’s kinda vague.

Looking for large, beefy cuttings.  Specifically Sugar Dragon, Psychical Graffiti, American Beauty, Dark Star,
Vietnamese White etc.  Wanting to start a garden with some solid rootstock pieces, rooted plants also desired.  No issues paying for quality product.

So I got multiple varieties from Cal Poly and one other source but I find their info slightly controversial or possibly incorrect.

I got:
American Beauty
Delight
Dark star
Edgar’s Baby
Physical Graffiti
Purple Haze
Shayna

How would you guys classify these as self pollination, sterile, etc?
I got very limited space and want to know what I’m trying to grow 3 years ahead of time.   I will probably be only planting a few of the higher recommendations.  I don’t mind giving away a few to friends that don’t make the cut.  I’m already reconsidering Edgar’s Baby as it’s so thorny.

So, just read 125 pages, omg.  Getting ready for planting a DF garden and looking for a source of some good S8 cuttings.  I recently ordered a bunch of stuff from Cal Poly Pomona and it’s frigging tiny (3”), so I got some time.  I’m going to take everyone’s advice and get a good pollinator going.  So if anyone has a good lead on xxl cuttings of S8 I’d be super interested.  Thanks for all the knowledge so far.  I looked at spicy exotics and they are out of almost everything.  I have no problems paying a member for some nice thick starter pieces.
