Thank you, yes I put the most grafts in my greenhouse, only the two ones on Sanford stay outside by temperatures between 3 and 12 ° C the last and the following days - spring will tell 😅

52
My wife bought me very excellent Clementines, unfortunately there was no variety named. Due to a information from a french citrusfriend that clementine clemenules survived one winter with -14 ° C, I thought to try to graft the small twiggs which came with the clementines on some of my Poncirus and citrumelos in pots but I also made two grafts on my Sanford Curafora in ground. Not sure if this will work during winter but we' ll see in spring/ summer, if it worked. I thought it worth a try  ;).

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Thomasville v. Morton?
« on: November 16, 2022, 12:25:45 AM »
Hello Mikkel and Poncirusguy,
I have a Thomasville in ground in Northern Italy and in Germany zone 7 and I have to confirm that Thomasville is very attractive concerning frosthardiness in Germany, because it survived ,- 15 ° C during 4 consecutive frost days and concerning the fruit, I harvested in March in Italy a fruit which I found one of the best tastes of my citrus plants, it tasted a mix of Pomelo and Orange, very delicious.
@ Poncirusguy, yes Fukushu isbalso very delicious with other taste, I have both and like the tadte of both.

High Jim,
that is a very interesting knowledge, that citrus grafted on flying dragon  (FD) ripen sone weeks earlier than on other rootstocks. Due to only smal FD seedlings I only have one FD  grafted wirh different  scions. So if my FD seedlings are a bit latger next year I will have rootstocks for dearf and early fruiting plants  ;). Regards Frank

Yesterday tasted the first Satsuma miyagawa fron a graft in Febr.2021 to my older lemon tree.
The following is interessting:
- the size is with 148 g much bigger than the fruits on my original Satsuma trees which I keep also a few years, these fruits have between 80 and 100 g.
- the taste is a little bit different, there is still a hint of an additional taste which I couldnt realy identify ( perhaps a hint of lemon ?)
Willbe interessting to see and taste next years fruits.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Stingerless bees for pollinations
« on: November 11, 2022, 01:56:11 AM »
Thank you, so perhaps it was only unlucky circumstances that there have been sone dead bees in my bloomsweet and not caused by my plant, si I' m happy, because my citrus blooming attract realy a lot of honey, bumble bees and other flying insects.

Question to the bee experts - on my citrus I have also a lot of bees in all kinds, but I noticed quite a few honey bees dead around ma blomsweet ? Could it be that some citrus flowers could be hazardous or toxic for bees ?

SC4001992, your fruits are really wonderful, thank youvery very much for this motivating post  :D.
In the three years now that I' ve enlarged my citrus collection and I tasted some of mine and bought citrus fruit, cocktail Pomelo and Tarocco orange are my taste favorites fast followed by satsumas and bloomsweet, Bloomsweet was ripe also in my z7 climate in astonishing 7 months !
Now Im curious how my valentine will taste in Febr./April next year.
But your valentine and Toni#1 looks very very beautiful and delicious.
Best regards Frank

very delicious varieties. Got Valentine pomelo last year and after abundant flowering she kept 3 fruits, not very big guess about 200 - 300 gramm each, but I' m very curious to taste the fruit and to the colour of the flesh. Oroblanco I have to, but still no flowers yet.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Poncirus+ x kumquat

Hello Akebia,
short imageupdate to the 9 month seedlings of Nippon Orangequat x ( Citrumelo ? ), only signs of trifoliat leave, see first picture at one leave. Plan is to graft the top next year to Poncirus or 5* Citrumelo and plant in ground a year later for Winter hardiness test. Still with back up of the other half of the plant.

Wow  ;D, thats very impressive. Thanks for the super pictures. Not sure if the Thong Dee is available in Europe, will have to check. Due to my climate I only can grow the citrus not so very winter hardy  In containers so I think growing of Thong Dee would be a challence growing in containers, concerning the container size and the nutrition  ;). If frosthardiness is similiar to cocktail pomelo I could try it in my space in Northern Italy in ground.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Feijoa in NJ zone 7a

Can confirm now hand pollination definitely will set fruit. These were the first cluster of flowers to open and the buds are noticeably swelling. I will update when fruit is mature.

Did your fruit get ripe in z7 ? I' m also in z7 and have some years a Fejoa, which mastered already - 15° C and four frostdays and also set some fruits, but they didn' t get fully ripe up to now.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Fig winter protection
« on: November 01, 2022, 05:25:41 PM »
I think if they are small protection with frost clothes is good.
But also it is much important to have frosthardy selections.
I' m in zone 7 and tested about 5 or 6 varieties and only 2 are immature very frost resistant.

69
I have albizia julibrissum, which got one self seedling I disn' t expect. Once I sawed seedlings and all died and now in the garden they made self sawing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Multi rootstock grafting

I have done this with citrus trees for testibg cold hardiness of different varieties. Up to now it works good, but I guess in future pruning of the fast growers will be necessary.

Very interesting the hybridyzation topic. I' m also very impressed about the first successes of high motivated Forum members like Kumin and Ilya. And I' m sure the more enthusiasts try different hybridyzation on the long run there will be useful citrushybrids.
In January I bougt a Nippon Orangequat with ripe edible fruit, which was very tasty and had some seeds. I sowed the few seeds and was very exited when I discovered in summer, that one of the seedlings had one leave which was trifiliate with very small two ears.
But now still have to wait a few years to see the fruit quality. Frost hardyness can be tested earlier by a graft on Poncirus rootstock.

72
Look very good the trees and fruit  :)

you surely can also use it as rootstock, due to my experience it is a good grower, but concerning the delicious fruits, I think there are lots of other good rootstocks which dint have good edible fruits and deliver better frosthardiness as Poncirus orCitrumelos.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Confused about caring for a potted meyer
« on: October 30, 2022, 05:07:47 PM »
Hi, welcome to the wonderful and complexe citrus world.
I also have meyer lemon and know it' s a very busy plant. From my experience I can answer as follows:
1. Meyer flowers several times a year. Fruits are ripe if they are yellow to light orange and a little bit smooth while light pressing by hand.
2. Normally citrus make main groth in spring, then is best time for potting citrus. Pruning is possible from spring to autumn. I have an old lemon which I prune several times a year due to very much growth.
3. Fertilizing is highly necessary due to growth and fruiting. Normaly fertilizing is necessary while the citrus plant is growing and fruiting from spring to autumn.
Cutrus needs much nitrogen and a lot of different elements like iron, maganese ..., so best is to look for spezial citrus fertilizer and fertilize as recommended on the fertilizer pack.
Have fun with your lemon, regards Frank.
