I went fruit hunting in Zacatecas during peak pitaya season. Here are pictures of the surrounding areas of southern Zacatecas (Jalpa, Juchipila, Santa Rosa, and the pitayas from the surrounding areas).

The growing area is mainly a zone 9B to 10A, light frosts can occur in the area (I believe these are strains of Stenocereus queretaroensis). I am told that the Zacatecas pitayas are tastier fruit strains then the surrounding states (I can't vouch on that statement, can be based on pride in the region).

The fruit is mainly sweet with a texture similar to a premium perfectly ripe dark fig. The flavor surpasses dragon fruit in sweetness and flavor. Certain selections can have a slightly acidic component to them. The color flesh range is Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple, White, and Lavender (rarer strain type). The size varies depending on growing conditions and strain, the premium cultivated selections can get as big as a duck eggs with most averaging sizes around medium to large chicken eggs.

Climate is semi arid tropical and subtropical. Season starts in May last till June. Excessive rain can sour the crop and cause crop failure from what the locals have said. Prime locations would be  zone +9A Southern California, Southern Arizona, Las Vegas, NV, Southern zone +9A Texas. The cacti may work as well in parts in Florida if its in a well drained full sun area, if the dry season last until late May. There is also the possibility of exploring different seedling variations that may fruit earlier or resist excess moisture issues related to fruit quality.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annonacin amounts in Annona fruits.
« on: June 01, 2016, 01:20:11 PM »
I found this interesting FDA lab study done recently on Annona fruits. For those with concerns with the toxicology of the fruit and its affect on cells. After reading through it, it seems that Rollinia, Atemoya, Sugar Apple, and most likely Cherimoya and Custard Apple have very low amounts of Annonacin and Squamocin. Pawpaw on the other hand has extremely high amounts with high amounts in soursop varying. It seems the annona fruits with the most domestication benefited greatly with drastically lower amounts of Annonacin.

I have been using LED grow lights for a couple years now. Usually I have used them to germinate some seedlings indoors. In the past the quality and intensity of the LED lights has been on the lower side. This year I bought a Mars Hydro 300w (140W true watt) LED light. It was recommend to have it for a 2x2 area for vegetative growth. So I purchased a 2'x2'x3' mylar grow tent and placed the Light above at about 2' 8" above the floor of the tent.

I have used lower powered LED UFOs, and found this one to be quite a bit brighter. The good thing was that the light for the are was more then adequate enough. The bad part was it was so bright for certain plants it caused bleaching of the leaves (white and clear new leaf growth). The leaves of certain seedlings were being over saturated with bright light.

From observations some seedlings did not mind the bright intense light. Nara Melon (Acanthosicyos horridus), most cacti seemed to really enjoy it and thrive with the light. Things like Coinosicys macranthus not so much, I actually had to move it to another area with a less intense light to renew its green growth. Myrciaria phitrantha seedlings have been a surprise and handle the bright light quite well. Garcinia sopsopia another one that handles bright light well as a seedling. In the end, it makes sense having separate grow tent/areas which have varying amounts of light intensity and humidity for germinating and nursing seedlings. Also it helps to be aware of the nature habitat of the plant to provide optimal light.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Some new fruit seedling pictures
« on: January 06, 2016, 12:11:04 AM »
I have been busy germinating plants during the winter. Been getting good results with a 137watt LED UFO inside a custom mylar enclosure. Here are some of the seedlings anywhere from 1 week to 3 months old.

Quararibea cordata

Garcinia paniculata

Coinosicys macranthus

Sterculia quadrifida

Stenocereus queretaroensis

Acanthosicyos horridus

So far everything is growing great. I am getting much faster growth under LED light 18hr/6hr off then natural light in the window sill (about 4hr direct and the rest of the hrs not direct)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trellis Ideas, suggestions?
« on: January 04, 2016, 06:30:10 PM »
I wanted to make some Trellises for Passion fruit, grapes, melons, and other vining fruits. These would be constructed in sandy soil in Florida. I just wanted to get some recommendations on building something that will last at least 5 years. Post material, wire anchor and wire setup. Recommended height (I was thinking 5ft?).

Any suggestions, tips, or tricks would be helpful  :).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Saba comorensis seedlings doing good
« on: October 06, 2015, 03:17:09 PM »
I have been growing Saba comorensis seedlings for over a year now. They are pretty tough plants and tolerant periods of dryness and tap water well from observations. I have 2 growing under oak trees in FL. 2 seedlings in containers and another seedling in a container in CA. I have also noticed that the plants root readily into decomposing oak leaves, this tells me that they are great candidates for air layering.
