Simmons vs Dupuis avocado for Miami area

Is the dupuis avocado better than simmonds? I’m
Considering adding an early season avocado to my yard and Simmons is the best I’ve tasted but I was told dupuis tastes better?

Simmons is watery. Dupois have more oil content. My personal taste is watery. I dislike hass.

A properly ripened Simmonds is not watery.  It actually has a very nice texture.  But I trust Carlos (CTMIAMI) when he says Dupuis is the superior avocado.

Dupuis has a long juvenility period does not set a lot of fruit. It is a tall slender tree if you let it grow normally.
The Simonds is a wider tree. Similar in quality if allowed to get into the 22+oz   Also has problems in fruit setting, like this year , commercial Simonds production in the Redlands is very low.  For the home owner the Dupuis I personally think is a better fruit and a better tree  if you have a small space.

I like Dupuis better than Simmonds but it’s kind of a shy bearer compared to the modern commercial varieties.

I haven’t measured but suspect there isn’t much of a difference in oil content between the two. Both are very low in oil (single digit %) as is typical of pure West Indian types. But It’s also not relevant to the flavor. Bacon avocado, for example , has much higher oil than Dupuis but Dupuis’ flavor is better. Really only matters if you’re intending to use it for guacamole or don’t care for the texture.

Ok. When I said watery doesn't mean bad taste. Wilson is watery too and is by far the #1 in Puerto Rico. Usually high oil content are more dry avocados. The perfect ones  must be creamy and nutty .The ones that
Fairchild garden  didn't got.

I will taste Simmons again this year but I’ve never tried Dupuis and not sure where to buy one. Honestly low production isn’t an issue since these trees get huge and produce millions of avocados anyway lol. I prefer high oil content and have selected tonnage and my mid season and oro negro as my late season. Based on my limited experience you can make guacamole from Simmons because it’s very creamy and it tastes very good.  If anyone knows where I can buy Dupuis fruit let me know!

Dr. Dupois are 3 different ones. I got them from Dominican Republic.(# 3 WORLD avocado  producer Nation ) Sorry all killed by Maria Hurricane
Once I got Dr. Melendez  #3 in a susceptible phytoptora
rootstock. You know the story! You can look at pine island nursery. I can recommend Doni from Lara Farm.
Soon I will get the Roni cultivar from my friend Julian.

The plus for Dupuis, at least in my grove. The fruit that is  pollinated last is small and sometimes  stay on the tree long , tasting amazing and stay small 8-10 oz.  A lot of friends beg for it.  The Simmonds keeps growing until they drop huge.   

 I keep repeating it. Is not about oil.  Is about individual taste,  made up of a number of things included but not limited to oils and yes your own taste buds.

Other early bearing varieties include Pollock, Arue, Fuchs.

If you don't mind the skin turning reddish when it ripens you could plant Hardee.

What tastes "best" is whatever tastes best to you.

I think in general early varieties tend to be what some describe as "watery".

Dupuis #2 taste very good to me....Pollock do as well.

LOTS of people LOVE Simmonds.

Another factor in how "watery" an avocado gets seems to be the amount of continued rainfall that they receive as they get close to maturity.

Early bearing varieties mature during the Florida rainy season.

The later bearing fruit has higher solids contents....higher oils.

Taste a few of each and see what you think.

Arue, Donnie, Hardee and Simmonds are all in current production....all of those varieties are being harvested/sold right now.
