Help ID this Annona Fruit ?
« on: April 11, 2022, 12:54:24 PM »
I got two large annona fruits from a co-worker of my wife. The fruits are both over 2 lbs each.
Can anyone help me with identifying this fruit.....

I ate one fruit today, it was very sweet, no negative, grainny texture near skin, excellent tasting.

Ok, thanks for the feedback.

I did talk to the person who gave me the fruit. He didn't know the variety name but said it was an Atemoya.

I also got some cuttings so now it's grafted on my trees. I like the sweet taste of this atemoya, I recently got a refractometer so I took some readings. This fruit has a Brix of 18, tastes very good.

Does Geffner fruits get over 2 lbs ?

These fruits were all large. He showed me a photo of one of his trees which had a dozen fruit about the same size hanging.

I have seen big geffner before… 2lbs sounds enormous, I feel California grows them larger for some reason.

Yes, Geffner can get over 2 lbs.  But that looks more like African Pride to me.  AP fruits aren't always uniform and sometime the shoulders will be bumpy and most time not.  They produce huge fruits.  The ripe fruits hang on the tree longer but also more likely to develop those brown hard spots you see around the seed carpels when they're on the tree too long.  My largest can be 3.5 to over 4 lbs.

Geffner don't get as large.  My largest ever has only been 3 lbs.  The bumps are more consistent and go from the shoulder of the fruit all the way to the bottom of the fruit.  They are also much more symmetrical in shape than AP.  The fruits don't last on the tree long as ripe fruits will drop.  However, amazingly you can keep ripe fruits in the fridge better and longer than any varieties I've had.

I'll try to find some pictures I've had in the past.

Joe, I think the california fruits are larger cause we have to hand pollinate everything to have a chance of getting fruits ahaha.

Annonas vary a lot year to year.

Without documentation it's just guessing. Glad you got a good one grafted!

Kaz, have you not eaten many cherimoyas or atemoyas before?

Brad,

Not much, only ones I have eaten are from the Asian markets and the one big fruit on my large tree. I haven't hand pollinated any of my cherimoya, so my large tree doesn't seem to get any fruits lately, only flowers. I do have an Africa Pride tree which had fruit this year (first time) but it was small and fell off before I could taste it.

I did grow out a Selma seedling tree and it has lots of flowers but the tree is skinny and tall (above my roof line). It has lots of flowers now but I can't reach them to hand pollinate it. I'm still recovering from knee replacement so my wife says to stay off the roof.

You will probably be blown away by a 30 brix cherimoya if you think 18 brix african pride is good.
